so i recently bought my brothers pc off of him but the mobo he had on was a 1150 slot size and needed a cpu, keep in mind that he gave me his Hdd that has windows 7 on it, along with some photos and personal files he still needed off of it . So I bought an i5 8400 and a 1151 slot mobo. I set it all up and everything was running fine in the bios screen but as soon as I got to the log in screen of windows my key board and mouse won’t do anything, the rgb lights are getting power but it won’t move the cursor and no keys will work. I’ve tried putting it in legacy mode and switching the ps2 simulation on aswell but nothing has changed. I’m tempted to reinstall windows since I have the disk but my brother needs some of the info, photos, files that is still on the hdd but I can’t transfer anything since I can’t get into windows, I also don’t know if reinstalling windows will delete those kind of files?

I think that you said that you replaced the motherboard. That requires an installation of the operating system unless you are lucky, as the needed drivers will (usually) be different.

If you want to copy some files off the hard drive before installing windows you can use a Linux live DVD/Usb stick and copy them onto an external hard drive or the Usb stick.

Do you have an external hard drive or a Usb stick ?

And I just tried reinstalling windows completely but when I booted it from the cd the options came up but I still couldn’t select anything.
