my microsoft usb wheel mouse is very erratic and sometimes stops working for a while. I tried updateing driver through drivemanager but no luck. My device manager says it is working.

Is it an optical mouse of some type, if so try cleaning the lens underneath as that being dirty can cause erratic behaviour. Use a qtip with a small amount of mild cleaning solution.

Try a different mouse and try a different USB port.

Make sure the surface the mouse is on isn't reflective.
