The mouse (& occasionally the keyboard) randomly freeze on my friend’s computer. Sometimes it happens after an hour or so of web-surfing, sometimes within a couple of minutes of turning the computer on.

These problems began to appear sometime about a month or 3 weeks ago. We didn’t take care to note when.

We are conscientious about installing Windows Updates (including the recent one that was reputed to slow down some computers); otherwise, no new hardware or software in ages.

I have defragged using Norton Systemworks 2003, constantly checked for viruses with the latest definitions, regularly run WinDoctor, and uninstalled and reinstalled the relevant drivers. I have swapped a keyboard and mouse with which I have no problems at all on my own computer – to no avail. I have searched this forum and the MS Knowledgebase without success.

Specs: Compaq 5184 with AMD K6-2 550, 256 megs RAM, 50% of a 6 gig HD free, Windows XP Home (installed clean on a reformatted HD), the most recent Creative drivers (2 years old) for the PCI video card (Savage4, 32 megs), MS Intellimouse Trackball (PS2), Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro. (I have used both MS generic WinXP drivers and the MS Intellimouse and Intellitype drivers for the mouse and keyboards in my experiments).

The computer is coming to the end of its useful life, I know. I handed it down to my friend. Until I am prepared to buy a new one for myself, however, I would like to make this old one last.

Could this be a symptom of motherboard or power supply failure?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Tell him to go to www.blkviper.com and slim down the services. It couldn't hurt.
