I was having problems with my mouse dragging in XP. So I looked up a solution at Microsoft's tech support. The solution said to make a system recovery point (which I later found does not save the state of the registry), and delete certain registry keys. I restarted my computer after doing this and plugged my mouse in. Nothing happened. It then occurred to me, the solution is for an intellipoint mouse and I'm using just a microsoft basic mouse. The hardware section of the mouse settings doesn't even recognize that a mouse exists, and the device manager no longer says "mice and other pointing devices." The lesson here is export the registry BEFORE making changes.

What can I do? I know how to get around windows with a keyboard, but I would like to fix the problem.

Welcome troubadour to TSG! Your mouse has to be plugged in before you restart. So plug your mouse in and restart. Your system will see the mouse at that time. Good Luck! :D

    Thanks for replying.

I've already restarted my computer with the mouse already plugged in. Still no effect.
