I do not want to use the built in Windows 8 Mail app but that is what I am currently using. I would like to use Thunderbird so I downloaded that but when I go to the import option within Thunderbird, Windows 8 Mail doesn't come up as an option to import from. How can I move all of my mail messages (and the account settings) from Windows 8 Mail to Thunderbird? It is a POP account so I can't just log in and redownload them. I only have one email account.

I would also like to import all of my contacts from the built in Windows app into Thunderbird. How can I do this?

Using the mail app from the tile layout in windows 8, I can't find the file menu to be able to choose export like the link you posted suggested. How can I access this menu? (Really struggling to get used to Windows 8!)

I have been trying to have a look at this one a bit more on my computer and it doesn't look like there is any way to export any details for the W8 app. In fact everything suggests that pop 3 emails can't even be accessed in the W8 app only Hotmail/outlook.com/gmail or other webmail based mail services

perhaps somebody else will have ideas

I'm not really sure where exactly my information is being stored. My ISP email address is connected with Windows Live Mail so I can access it from outlook.com but prefer to use a desktop email client. Does Microsoft store my emails on the outlook.com server? If so, I wouldn't need to export the info from Windows 8 Mail, I could just set up the account in my new client and it would redownload? However that sounds like an IMAP account to me and I know for a fact that my ISP only supports POP, so why are my messages still on outlook.com and not just on my computer?

Also, does Windows send all of my contacts from my People app to outlook.com as well? I noticed that they were all available when constructing a new message on outlook.com... If those contacts are stored in the cloud then I wouldn't need to bother exporting them either, they would be available to whatever client I want to use, wouldn't they?

Who, exactly, is your email provider? What is the part of your email address that comes after the @ sign?
