A few weeks ago I used Movie Maker to edit some MP4’s. Everything worked; I could view the edited MM files with no problems. Now, those same files display a black screen when played. Today, I made a test MM from one of the MP4’s. It works perfectly. Windows recently updated. Could that be the source of the problem? I did a video driver check and I have the latest version.

Thanks for any help you can give.

    Grayrail.

Windows Update might be the problem, but a Restore/Uninstall Update will not solve it, I fear. Unfortunately Microsoft no longer supports Movie Maker, for well over a year now, and the Updates may reflect that lack of support.
And it seems there are no downloads now available from MS, so a reinstall doesn't seem possible, though some one else may know.

Even downloading Win Essentials back then (which included WMM) didn't help me get it back.
(My prob was no start, missing dll's)
Are you getting any error notifications?
I feel you would have posted such, if you had.

I can offer these free alternatives HERE, and more recent paid/free suggestions HERE.
(I see DaVinci Resolve has held up...)

Should you choose one of those offerings you want to be sure they're compatible with your version of Win7.
And I don't know if any can salvage a WMM project if saved in the default WMM format.
I would imagine most would handle MP4, esp the paid software.

    Just my 2 pesos worth...

    RT,

You’re correct, there is no error message, just a black screen. Thanks for the suggestions for alternate software. I still have the source MP4 files so I can recreate the portions I want to keep with some other tool; apparently it's not possible to save the MM files into some other format. I’m learning the hard way what not to do.

    Thanks for your assist.

You're most welcome, wish I had a solution rather than a suggestion.
