Some applications leave their settings folders behind when you uninstall them. Try reinstalling Firefox and see if it is able to find your old bookmarks.

On my XP, the folder C:\Documents and Settings\Root\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\mw2ckbbz.default stores the bookmarks. ( The folder name under Profiles seems to be random characters ) See if you have a folder like it. If it is there, you have a good chance of recovering your bookmarks.
