I was wondering if anyone knew of any good software for converting mpeg files to Avi. I'm not sure which file format of the 2 is actually better quality. I'm wanting to put more files to cd..and .mpeg seems to allocate me enough space for only 2 files at best. Would Avi be comparable to what .mp3 is and Mpeg be to what a WAV file as far as Quality,File size, and Compression? thanks in advance.

you can find out lots at dvdrhelp
    - user guides, software guides, and forum site for all things DVD and related.

basically it depends on your viewing preference and the quality of the file you start with:

PC only - .avi works fine although .mpg can be higher quality (depending on what conversion settings you used to encode it)

TV through DVD player - you need to convert to .mpg (as a VCD or SVCD cd) to play them and it usually is better quality (again depending on your conversion settings)

    VCD is approximately VHS quality
SVCD can be as good as DVD

a good quality VCD or SVCD can hold 60-70 minutes of film on one 700 Mb/80 minute cd although there are some conversions that allow up to 120 minutes on a cd (more minutes = lower quality generally)

usually the conversion is .avi to .mpg but you can use VirtualDub (link in the tools section) to save a .mpg back to .avi

Software.... Try "EO Video" I just can't say enough about it.
It makes me long for a bigger Hard Drive, and a working burner.:D

It will convert, split, and alows you to change size and quality of sound and video.
