I'm trying to play an .mpg video on Windows 7. Windows Media Player cannot play the file. It says "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."

Someone suggested downloading VLC Media player. I downloaded and installed it with no problems, but the video is still not playing. This time there is no error message, it's just that nothing happens when I open the file.

Hi,

Have you installed any codecs on the computer? Such as K-lite codec pack or XP codec pack?

VLC has the benefit of having the codecs with it, so if it doesn't play with that I'd be asking if the video file could be corrupted?

Open the file using gSpot or MediaInfo and check the file specs. You should see the video and audio codecs/specs listed.

It's possible the file is corrupt or not really a mpeg file.
