We have a local database to gather data on various machines in the company. We have a direct SQL link to the MS SQL server on our local machines, but we can't carry around laptops all day while going form machine to machine due to space and battery constraints, so the local version of the database runs on each machine from a flash drive and is later uploaded to the SQL server.

The issue comes in when the uploads are done from offsite locations to the SQL server. We have a fairly wide pipe to our data center (you can get a 10-15 mb file in a couple seconds more often than not. When uploading from the local Access DB to the SQL server in the data center (on a gigabit link), the appending of new data takes about 5 minutes, and checking existing data against the data in the database takes about 7.5-8 minutes.

When offsite, at the same locations that can move 10+mbps, the appends take 30-45 minutes and the cross-check takes 1-1.5 hours. What is it about access/MSSQL that causes this throttling issue on an otherwise wide enough pipe?
