I have a gateway computer that won't boot into windows. Its boots only into dos mode. I have tried the command exit and win to no avail. I have gone into safe mode and shut down, run scan disk but nothing worked. I even tried the step by step confrigration which got me into windows but as soon as I shut down and restart it goes back into the dos prompt.

Could be you have a memory resident virus. Shut the pc off and unplug from surge protector for about 10 minutes. Plug it back in and try to start again. Let us know what happens.

We moved the PC to another room and it took about a 1/2 hour to hook it back up.

Still having the problem? Have a look at this link:

    http://support.microsoft.com/directory/article.asp?ID=KB;EN-US;Q136416

Check your msdos.sys file (it is by default hidden and read only) in the c:\ directory to make sure you do not have a BootGui=0 line in it.

Check for the winboot.ini file (also hidden -- tick "show all files" in Folder Options>View)

Check your autoexec.bat file for command.com entries.
