MS word 2000 access denied

i seem to be having some trouble with ms word the machine is XP pro 1gig ddr 40gig hdd, i can explore to a users area on a server with no problems, I open a file in word and try to save, it comes up with access denied, so I check security and permissions all is fine, yet this user is still unable to save a word document, all other office products save fine, al microsoft products work and save ok, and other software can connect to the share and read + write,

any ideas, im stumped

Is it opening read only?

no it opens as if it was normal, we do have these files shared on a samba server, im not sure if you are familiar with it.
