Today I had a issue with sygate & ZA not operating in presence of each other.....so I removed ZA & while doing so I went to command prompt & changed Msconfig to load with selective startup with only "originalBoot.ini" selected there.......& after ZA was removed perfectly.....I changed msconfig back to normal startup.........while doing this.....it gave a error (chkdsk file corrupted) & whe it re-started......it loads without Norton,Lan coming on right hand side (which comes with a normal startup)

Though I can surf but i cant see my lan in network....when I try to remove any software it sez "The Windows installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running on Safe mode or if the Windows is not installed correctly"

Though I did see this prompt before in safemode but right now I am not in a safemode

    Pls Help

Have you tried running System Restore to fix this? It sounds like you have some damaged files or registry hives on the hard disk.

Start > Run: msconfig > Launch System Restore and choose a calendar date prior to these problems.

Depends on how labor intensive that is for you and whether you have had experience doing it before on a similar system.

There are piecemeal things you can do to try to sort this out.

The first would be to get the Windows Installer Service running properly. Here's a link for that:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315346

If you can get Add/Remove programs working properly you can remove and reinstall the faulting applications.

To attack the networking problem, the first thing I would try is to reset the Windows Winsock.

In XP SP2 you can do it this way: Start > Run: cmd and at the prompt enter:

    netsh winsock reset

What kind of reinstall did you do? If you formatted the drive or did a "clean" XP install you may have wiped out your Sound Card's chipset drivers.

If you look in the Device Manager under "Sound, ..." -- what is identified there, and does it have drivers installed?

What kind of Sound Card was identified previously?

Windows should have detected any installed devices during the install, but you can force it to search by going to the Control Panel > Add New Hardware Wizard and having it search.
