    This error is preventing me from starting windows 98. It comes up just after the background for the desktop loads, and before the network password dialog. I regret being at work (computer affected at home) so I cannot post the exact error, but it is something like: MSGSRV32 caused a invalid page fault in KERNEL32, followed by code/hex numbers (I will be more specific if needed). I have looked to Microsoft's knowledge base and nothing there seems to be the same as the problem I am having. I tried to delete my password files, didn't work. Any ideas, and again, I will be more specific if needed on the code. Thank you.

    Have you tried to boot to Safe Mode? To do that, start the computer and hold down the CTRL button until you see the boot menu. Choose Safe Mode.

    If you get into Safe Mode, go to msconfig>start up and uncheck eveything other than scanreg and anyhiing yout particular computer needs to operate, including power profile.
    See if Windows starts now.

    Which Version of Internet Explorer do you have?
    See if you can repair it while in Safe Mode.

    GO to Control Panel>add Remove Programs and scroll to the Internet Explorer Entry. Click Remove.
    Three choices will pop up. Choose Repair.

    Safe mode works, and I have done all the normal checking for conflicts and such, but am unsure of where to go from there. As I said, the error seems very similar to several listed on the microsoft site, but not quite the same. I tried removing the .pwl files as microsoft suggested to fix a similar problem, but that didn't work. Thank you.

    Did you try the Internet Explorer Repair?
    Please post the error when you get to it. And your system Specs.
    Did you recently remove or install any hardware and/or programs?

    Please run Startup Log and then copy and paste the contents into a post here. You can copy onto a floppy and post using another computer.
    Here's the link to Startup Log
    http://home.earthlink.net/~rmbox/Reticulated/Toys.html
    That will list what is trying to start. I think you can run it from Safe Mode. Give it a try.

    Also, boot to the boot menu and choose to create a bootlog.
    Download and install Bootlog analyzer. Run it choosing the "Show Delays" and "Show Failures" boxes at the top of the page.
    Here's the link for that. I hope you can Download and save to floppy from your location.

    I posted earlier and mosaic1 among others tried to help. I said I would post how things went and more complete info about my system and problem so now I will. I have an AMD k6 266 with 64mb ram, windows 98 Voodoo2 card, Aurel Vortrex sound card, Diamond Speedstar 64 Video card, standard ps/2 keyboard and a logitech optical mouse (installed shortly before problem began), and I.E. 5.5.
    The problem is that when windows starts up it gets to the desktop background and just before the network login box comes up it gives the following error:

    MSGSRV32 caused an invalid page fault in KERNEL32.DLL at 015f:bff7b983.

    I repaired IE, no go. I have ctrl-alt-del and there are no programs running. I have used MSCONFIG.EXE to uncheck everything and still happens. I am going to try the bootlog and startlog programs and post what I find here soon. If anyone has any ideas, please advise. I am on another computer and have access to the problematic one now. Thank you.

    Most of the problematic programs in startup (for example Find Fast) would have been eliminated as a cause if you unchecked everything in Msconfig> startup.

    However you have a couple of puzzles I'm not sure about.

    One involves VQRHDN.exe running from Win.ini. No web hits on this and I think it may be a remnant of a Trojan. I would run win.ini from start>run and remove that. Typically you should have only:

    run=
    load=

    empty, with nothing after them.

    The other puzzles are the entries being run from the registry's RunOnce key. These are usually deleted after installs and should not be running each startup.

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Cur
    rentVersion\RunOnce:

    "wextract_cleanup0"="rundll32.exe C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM\\advpack.dll,DelNodeRunDLL32 \"c:\\windows\\TEMP\\IXP000.TMP\\\""
    "GrpConv"="grpconv.exe -o"

    From start, run regedit and navigate to that key. Right cllick on those entries in the Right Hand pane and delete them.

    Also you should disable the Realplayer and Winamp start agents from within their preferences interface, or they may not stay unchecked.
