Not quite sure what the problem is, i'll detail it.

i turn my computer on, sign in etc, its fine, once i've been inactive (e.g. gone to work and left it on the desktop) for awhile, i turn the monitor back on, run Messenger, and it will flash my friends list for about a second, then exit the program, and continues to do so until i've restarted my computer, not INCREDIBLY bad, but, if i'm in the middle of a large download and need to send an IM, can get frustrating as i need to sacrifice one or the other. any ideas?

Have you tried reinstalling the program? Usually strange issues like this can be corrected in this way.

It happens with a few of my friends using msn messenger, It's just buggy as hell, I dont think Microsoft actually test there stuff before it's sent out to the public, Try downgrading (getting an older version) that should be stable enough, But your problem is just a flaw with MSN

Do you have hardware DEP enabled? if so, try adding windows messenger to your exclusion list.
