is this with all audio or just the media player?
if just the media player..you may have the eq settings to high on the bass frequencies...causing the system to act goofy because it rejects the bass.

I am on vista right now so i will have to go by memory for xp
Get the interface open for you sound controls

this can be done through control panel or the volume icon in the tray at the bottom
you may have to double or right click the the icon
you will see a few sliders...the first is your standard volume..this slider goes up and down when you turn your volum up and down
the one right next to it...slide it to the halfway position.
    Post back with the results
