We currently have several domain controllers (server 2008) running individual domains between sites (linked via vpn).. We're looking at merging the several domains into one to allow users to be able to login anywhere in the network and still access their data without any issue. As the servers are currently running Server 2008, we're also considering upgrading them to server 2012 at the same time - so its looking like it could be a complete setup from scratch...

I'm after advice from people that have done this before to make the transition as smooth as possible.

users profiles are stored in a shared directory on the each of the servers at each location, after the merge, would it be 'best practice' to have the directory sync across all the servers so data and personalised settings are readily available? (I'm not sure how else you'd actually do it)
