    Welcome to TSG flamingnewt.

But, umm, could you provide a little more detail? Are you seeing what you think is an error message? When exactly -- before the desktop loads (on a DOS screen), or after? Does it go away, or do you have to click on something to close it out.

And when did it begin? Did you install or remove anything just prior?

If it occurs after the desktop has loaded (background, icons, etc...), it is likely caused by something loading in the "startup group" (msconfig>startup). If it occurs before you see the desktop (no background, no windows startup sound), it could be coming from autoexec.bat, config.sys, system.ini or win.ini.

To troubleshoot and isolate it you need to use the System Configuration Utility (msconfig). There is a tutorial in this link for "clean boot troubleshooting"

If you'd like one of us to take a thorough look at your startup profile and maybe offer some suggestions for improved performance as well -- download the Startuplog.zip file from the site below. Unzip and run Startuplog.com -- it will place the file startuplog.txt on your desktop. Copy and paste the full contents of that (not stubbpaths.txt) in your next reply.
