Are you trying to install "over the top" of MM7?? If so perhaps you'll have to take the leap and uninstall old version 1st; deleting any and all files/folders left behind. If you've done this already not much to suggest except the usuall ...disable Virus Scanner while installing.. May also help to Alt+Crtl+Del and quit ALL progs except explorer and systray then try to install...
    Good luck

Thanks for your help. I have done all that you suggest. Nothing seems to help. I can not uninstall any of the upgrades above 7.0 as it is not completely installing. I have to reinstall 7 over what is there to be able uninstall files. Its real weird. I am hoping someone will come up with a file that didn’t load, (type answer). Thanks again, Kathy

A lot of mfc42.dll errors can be caused by Xupiter....use what ever means you have; ...HJT..Spbot S&D...AdAware..etc; to check for spyware. If nothing there what version of mfc42.dll do you have in your C:\windows\system folder??..Start>Find>Files/folder>type mfc42.dll>when found Right click>version tab..

I have used Spbot, AdAware..ALL THE TIME (I have HijackThis, but am not sure what to delete. I have deleted some stuff & had no problems after the deletes.)
This MMatch problem has been going on a long time. It started with windows98 sand my sister had no problem with 98se so I upgraded. But it made no difference. I have been going through the archives and a lot of people seem to have the same problem, with lots of different advice. A lot of them have had no luck in solving it.
I have several versions of mfc42.dll
6.00.8665.0 system, Easy CD Creator, MediaFace, Olympus,
    NG Trip Navagator
    4.21.7022 C\js673, Scanner HP (scanner doesn't work-conflict)
    4.21.7160 OPTIONS\CABS\PWS
    4.21.7160 OPTIONS\CABS\DRIVERS
    4.21.7325 \VCM
    6.00.8447.0 NORTON, doc to go
    6.00.8447.0 & 6.00.8665.0 Ulead
Thanks again for your help, Kathy

But you should only have one in C:\windows\system....that's (most likely)the one causing the error..

6.00.8665.0 is the one in C:\windows\system. How do I go about replacing it? or finding out if it is truely the problem?

Unless you have Visual Studio you should have version #6.0.8447.0...the version you have is the ME version according to MS "database" of dll link here---->MS dll versions
Why not try this..rename it to mfc42.old and copy one of you version 6.00.8447.0 to windows\system...if nothing change as far as install either remember what you did or just change it back...

PS, I shut all programs running in the background and was able to name it old and put the other in its place. I guess I will check all the programs I can think of to see if all is well. Thanks and I will let you know if it worked or not. K

Jwbirdsong, I just sent musicmatch a detailed email. I went to their web site and filled out the detailed email for their support. I tried this 2 years ago / with my problem never getting solved. Let’s see what happens this time. It is sooo frustrating! You pay for lifetime upgrades and then can't upgrade. I am just thankful I saved all the previous exe for the program. I have done that with most of the programs I have downloaded. I have a folder with all exe's downloaded on me D drive. You just never know when you might need them. K
