I must download a new browser. I've been using IE forever. It's no longer acceptable on many of the sites I use.
The only problem I have with downloading a new browser is my favorites. Will I lose them? Or, will they remain exactly where they are and as they are?

Downloading a new browser or any other file will not impact your favorites.

Many browsers can import your IE favorites either during installation or later. Importing them will make a copy for the browser to use, but does not delete or move the originals.

For Windows 7 the main ones are Chrome, Firefox and Opera. There are others but those 3 are the most commonly used. Personally I use Vivaldi which is made by some people who used to work for Opera.

You can install as many as you like and try them then pick the one you like best. I think all of those will be able to 'import' your existing favourites.

I'm here and no I don't participate in any Black Friday madness. I enjoyed the turkey I roasted on Thursday and watched Christmas movies.

I run Windows 7 on four computers. My default browser is Palemoon.

But I also have FF ESR which stands for extended support release and isn't updated every 6 weeks. Security updates are done.

I also have Vivaldi, based on Chromium (a bit different from resource hungry Chrome) on my 32 bit desktop and Waterfox on my 64 bit netbook.

I refuse to install Chrome on any Windows computer even though it is the most popular.

Why Palemoon, a branch of Firefox? I found it to be so much faster than Firefox so I switched to it in 2014.

You can try portable versions to see what feels comfortable. The portable versions will be slower than the installed versions but you can have a look and ask questions on how to do things.

softpedia is a safe download site. I don't go near softonic because they've bundled junk in the past.

portableapps is also a safe site to download anything.

Vivaldi doesn't have a portable version. I have downloaded the exe and put it on a folder on my desktop rather than installing.

I'm a little confused . . which one would you suggest for a novice like myself? My main concern is my favorites. I'm hoping when I convert to another browser I won't lose them. I have a very long list of them.

What happens is you 'import' the favourites into the new browser so you can use them with it, the original favourites in IE will still be there.

Just try some other browsers, we can't tell which one you will like the best.

Any browser I mentioned will seem strange for someone using IE for years.
You can import IE's favorites into any of the browsers I mentioned.
FF: When you open Firefox for the first time, a wizard will ask if you want to import Favorites from another browser on your computer. If Firefox does not give you this prompt, you can access this wizard by going to the File menu and choosing Import. Follow the steps in the wizard to import your Favorites.

Export from IE 11
Scroll down to IE 11

Palemoon and Waterfox: 1. Click on Bookmarks
2. Click on Organize Bookmarks
3. Click on Import and Backup
4. Select Import from HTML
