I have a few problems. I have two visurses that will not permanently go away, even though my virus software finds them each time it scans and says it deletes them (software is EZ Antivirus from CA). Also, I am running STOPZilla which, every time I run Internet Explorer, tells me that something wants to change my homepage, and am I ok with that? I click <no>, but it happens over and over.

Can anyone tell me how to effect permanent solutions?

    THANKS!

    Chuck

    Hi KellerC2

    Welcome to TSG! :)

    Please do this:

First create a permanent folder somewhere like in My Documents and name it Hijack This.

Now Click here to download Hijack This. Download and save the file to the Hijack This folder you just created.

Click on Hijackthis.exe to launch the program.

Click the "Scan" button when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.

The log should open in notepad. Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.

DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required. Someone here will be glad to advise you on what to fix.

    Restart to safe mode.

How to start your computer in safe mode

Because XP will not always show you hidden files and folders by default, Go to Start > Search and under "More advanced search options".
Make sure there is a check by "Search System Folders" and "Search hidden files and folders" and "Search system subfolders"

Next click on My Computer. Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
    Click "Apply" then "OK"

Now find and delete the C:\Documents and Settings\Keller\Application Data\urpo.exe file.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\Keller\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

    Empty the Recycle Bin

Click here to download CWShredder. Close all browser windows, click on the cwshredder.exe then click "Fix" (Not "Scan only") and let it do it's thing.

When it is finished restart your computer.

Go here and download Adaware SE.

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode tick Perform full system scan.

Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.

Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

    Restart your computer.

I went through all steps. At the final restart, my antivirus software displayed this message "Windows\System32\IR.exe is a WIN32.secdrop.M trojan". What do I do about that?

Also, I get this message in a window at restart: "You used the System COnfiguration Utility to make changes to the way Windows starts. The System Configuration Utility is currently in Diagnostic or Selective Startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and this utility to run every time Windows starts. Choose Normal Start-up mode on General tab to start Windows normally and undo the changes you made using SYstem Configuration Utility". How should I proceed?

    Is everything else better?

    When you get this message:

"You used the System COnfiguration Utility to make changes to the way Windows starts. The System Configuration Utility is currently in Diagnostic or Selective Startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and this utility to run every time Windows starts. Choose Normal Start-up mode on General tab to start Windows normally and undo the changes you made using SYstem Configuration Utility".

Just ignore that message and put a check in the box by "Don't show me this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" and click "OK". You will not be bothered by the message again.

Boot to safe mode and delete the Windows\System32\IR.exe file if it is still there.

Now please rescan with Hijack This and post another log.

I checked the box regarding Safe Mode, but I wish I knew the reasoning behind why I did it. Can you explain?

Here is the new log from HT after deleting IR.exe

    Fix this one:

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Ncao] C:\Documents and Settings\Keller\Application Data\urpo.exe

Boot to safe mode and delete the C:\Documents and Settings\Keller\Application Data\urpo.exe file.

Also I notice that you do not have an antivirus running or a firewall. If I may so this without being rude, with the net as it is these days it is quite foolish to be without an antivirus and a firewall. By all means get both ASAP! See this thread for some good free ones:

    http://forums.techguy.org/t110854/s.html

    Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on and create a restore point.

    To create a restore point:

Single-click Start and point to All Programs.
Mouse over Accessories, then System Tools, and select System Restore.
In the System Restore wizard, select the box next the text labeled "Create a restore point" and click the Next button.
Type a description for your new restore point. Something like "After trojan/spyware cleanup". Click Create and you're done.

I have Computer Associates EZ antivirus loaded and running.
That is the program that keeps telling me about trojans and viruses.
Despite all the things you have told me to do, I still get one or more new virus messages every day! That never used to happen. Why am I suddenly being accosted?

Once again I ask, what are the names and locations of these infected files that you are being warned about?

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these. Close ALL windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Ncao] C:\Documents and Settings\Keller\Application Data\urpo.exe

Now find and delete this file:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Keller\Application Data\urpo.exe

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Go to Start > Run and type %temp% in the Run box. The Temp folder will open. Click Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

    Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn System Restore back on and create a restore point.

They are all at this starting point:
    C:\System Volume Information\_restore{987E0331-0F01-427C-A58A-7A2E4AABF84D}

    then add to that
    \RP419\A0014880.exe is a WIN32.SecDrop. M trojan
    \RF416\A0014616.exe is a Win32.Rbot.vu worm
    \RP411\A0013969.exe is a Win32.Secdrop.M trojan
    \RP411\A0014109.exe is a Win32.Secdrop.M trojan
    \RP411\A0014169.exe is a Win32.Secdrop.M trojan
    \RP419\A0014880.exe is a Win32.Secdrop.M trojan

C:\System Volume Information\_restore{987E0331-0F01-427C-A58A-7A2E4AABF84D} is in System Restore. Those should be gone now if you turned off System Restore and then turned it back on as I suggested in my last post.
