what message was received that indicated it did not work
as the message
startup repair is checking your system for problems
indicates that it is progressing and you should have left the CD in until the message changed

to for example
What if Startup Repair can't fix my problem?
If repairs aren't successful, you'll see a summary of the problem and links to contact information for support. Your computer manufacturer might include additional assistance information

When the first message appears click cancel
If the send infromation window appears click NO
then on the first window click advanced options for system recovery
select cmd prompt
post back when you have that on the desktop
it will I think say
