it started a few months ago and at the time i just kind of ignored it cause i tend to procrastinate pretty much everything. but in the past few weeks i've actually been trying to fix this, and at first i thought it was just a trojan or some other type of malware. so as usual, i updated and ran spybot, but it came out clean and it still continued to freeze on me. i was adamant it had to be a trojan, so i downloaded AVG anti-virus which found and cleaned 6 trojans which i knew i had and i figured, problem solved. but it wasn't, it continued to freeze on me, no matter what i was doing. in fact the only time it really doesn't freeze on me is when i'm idle on my desktop not doing anything. so i googled frozen comps and have summarized that its either a temperature problem, a power problem, a memory problem, or a hard drive problem. so i opened my cpu and cleaned out the very little dust on the fans and made sure they were running properly, which they were, and left the bay door open just in case. yet it still froze. i made sure the power cord was firmly in it's socket and in the outlet and yet it still froze which led me to believe its an internal problem. so i cleaned up my registry and defragged my drives and yet it still froze. in fact it would freeze half way through my defrags. but the strange thing about my freezes i noticed, compared to other people's that i've read, is that when mine freezes, any music or sound thats playing continues to play even while the screen is frozen. as if my computer is still running fine but that something is getting disconnected along the way not letting me move or do anything. also, i'm broke as hell, so if you suggest any type of software make sure its freeware. thanks.

Please click here to download and install version 2.0.2 of the HijackThis Installer.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

    Do not fix anything

Windows Search 4.0 has been pushed by Windows Update. In my opinion, it's useless and only hogs system resources. I would remove it.

What happens in Safe Mode? Is the computer still freezing in that mode?

Except for AVG, nothing else in Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - Startup(tab) needs to auto-load and run in the background.

Remove the checkmark in all the other entries, then click Apply - OK - Restart.

When the small System Configuration Utility window appears, ignore the message. Put a checkmark in it before you click OK to close it.

Start HijackThis and run a scan, then copy-and-paste that new log here.

Phantom: got rid of Windows Search 4.0.
i left it on in safe mode it didn't seem to freeze. but i also wasn't able to use the internet or run Fallout 3 and see if it froze while processing heavy loads.

Flavallee: except for AVG, nothing else was running. so i did a MSCONFIG. removed the checkmarked entries. restarted but the System Configuration Utility window didn't come up upon restart. so i probably did something wrong. i ran hijackthis anyways in case i had done it right:

Your new log shows that you unchecked

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: AVG9_TRAY E:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG9\avgtray.exe

in Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - Startup(tab). You need to go back and recheck it, then click Apply - OK - Restart.

The small "System Configuration Utility" window(see screenshsot) will appear during restart. When it does, put a checkmark in it before you click OK.

Let's see what's installed in that computer.

Start HijackThis, but don't run a scan.

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

    Click the "Save List" button.

Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere. It'll then open in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire file here.

Uninstall these programs because they're outdated or aren't needed or are dangerous to use.

    uTorrent

    AML Free Registry Cleaner 4.21

    Device Doctor 1.0.0.1

    Device Doctor Toolbar

    Java(TM) 6 Update 11

    LimeWire 5.4.6

    Registry Easy 5.6

Restart your computer after they've all been uninstalled.

    Download and save these programs:

Sun Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0.19(Java 6 Update 19)

    Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.45

    SUPERAntiSpyware 4.35.0.1002

Close all open windows first, then install them.

Restart your computer after they've all been installed.

Start HijackThis and run a scan.

Save that new log and then copy-and-paste it here.
