How much RAM do you have?

Please click here to download and install version 2.0.2 of the HijackThis Installer.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

    Do not fix anything

    Run HijackThis again.

Click on Open The Misc Tools section.

    Click on Open Uninstall Manager...

    Click on Save list...

Save the text file to the desktop.

Copy and paste the log (from Notepad) in your next post.

Answer the question and follow the instructions in post #2.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

What's the 7-character "service tag number" of your Dell Dimension 4500s?
(Assuming it's the same computer that you're discussing here)

I did just as you suggested and Norton security gave me a msg that said " you are one of the very first Norton users to download this file. We recommend that you not download until more is known about this file. Is it safe for me to go ahead and download it anyway?

According to service tag number 4VMJT11, here is the Dell support and software site that's specific only to your Dell Dimension 4500S desktop. I highly suggest that you add and save this site in your browser favorites/bookmarks list so you can refer to it when needed.

According to the system information section, that desktop is almost 8 years and came with only 128 MB of RAM. Hopefully, you've increased the amount to at least 512 MB. It uses DDR PC2100 modules and supports up to 2048 MB of RAM.

Right-click MY COMPUTER, then click Properties. How much RAM is listed there?

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

The HJTInstall.exe file is safe to download and install.

I have only 128 mb of ram. I really don't know anything about computers. I bought this computer second hand for my kids to help with school work. It's so slow;they don't even bother with it.

Then you would be best served getting some more memory (Ram)........at least another 256mb or more if the PC allows

Follow Phantom010's instructions in post #2.

We need to see what's installed, and we need to see what's auto-loading and running in the background.

The startup load will likely need to be trimmed down, and some programs will likely need to be removed and/or updated.

Adding more RAM can wait for now, but you really need to add more if you want to see a noticable improvement in speed and performance.

You haven't completed the second half of Phantom010's instructions.

We need to see an uninstall list.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

Your computer has a MyWebSearch infestation(and who knows what else at this point).

Go here to download and save Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.46.

Go here to download and save SUPERAntiSpyware 4.37.0.1000.

Close all open windows first, then install them both.

Restart your computer after they've both been installed.

I'll give you full instructions next for using them.

I had a cruddy old laptop with 256Mb RAM. It was so slow, and no matter what clean-ups or optimisations I use, I could never ever get it to work as fast as I wanted.

And by the way. How much did you buy that computer for? if you don't mind me asking. And do you know if the previous user formatted the computer (Wiped everything and reinstalled windows).

Adding more RAM is not optional. XP needs at least 512 MB and I recommend 1 GB.

As for MyWebSearch, it does show in your "Add or Remove Programs" so you can start by uninstalling it from there. This thing is a real parasite and spreads everywhere in the registry. It will definitely slow your computer down.

    Uninstall MyWebSearch, as advised.

Here are detailed instructions for using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware - after you get them installed and restart your computer.

    Start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

Click "Updates(tab) - Check for Updates".

When the definition files have updated, click "OK".

Click "Scanner(tab) - Perform quick scan - Scan".

If infections are found during the scan, the number of infections will be highlighted in red.

When the scan is finished, click "Show Results".

Make sure that everything is selected, then click "Remove Selected".

If you're prompted to restart to finish the removal process, click "Yes".

    Start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware again.

    Click "Logs"(tab).

Highlight the scan log entry, then click "Open".

When the scan log appears in Notepad, copy-and-paste it here.

    Start SUPERAntiSpyware.

    Click "Check for Updates".

When the definition files have updated, click "Close".

Click "Scan your Computer - Perform Quick Scan - Next".

If infections or problems are found during the scan, a list will appear.

When the scan is finished and the scan summary window appears, click "OK".

Make sure that everything in the list is selected, then click "Next".

If you're prompted to restart to finish the removal process, click "Yes".

    Start SUPERAntiSpyware again.

    Click "Preferences - Statistics/Logs"(tab).

Highlight the scan log entry, then click "View Log".

When the scan log appears in Notepad, copy-and-paste it here.
