I am using Windows 2000. My MB is about four months old (MSI). 1.7 GH. I have 512 Megs of RAM. I use Firefox almost exclusively. My browser takes as long as two or three minutes to load. When I read email that has graphics the emails open slowly and sometimes the browser will crash. I have DSL with At&T. Some of my files seem really sluggish when I try to open them. The computer has just gotten generally sluggish. I am posting my Hijackthis log to see if anybody can identify any problems I can do something about. When I close down my machine I get an error that says LXCFconn.exe failed to initialize. I thank you kindly for any advice you can offer. I run SpyBot and Adaware regularly and my Zonlab suite scans once a week.

Did you configure OpenDNS?

LXCFconn.exe sound like Lexmark so you might try removing and reinstalling your printer.

Run HJT again and put a check in the following:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - AutorunsDisabled - (no file)
O18 - Protocol: AutorunsDisabled - (no CLSID) - (no file)

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

I am sorry. I do not understand what you mean when you say "configure" OpenDNS. I changed my settings to theirs and things seemed to improve so I left their tcp/ip settings in place. I did that more than a year ago. By the way, I use Firefox almost exclusively. Thank you so much for helping me!

That's fine I was just checking.

Run HJT again and put a check in the following:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://as.starware.com/dp/search?x=w...KX/eE/D7ENHbeS

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

Did you reinstall your printer and if so did that fix the problem?

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.

  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
  • Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.

Run HJT again and put a check in the following:

O2 - BHO: SpywareBlock Class - {0A87E45F-537A-40B4-B812-E2544C21A09F} - (no file)
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - AutorunsDisabled - (no file)
O18 - Protocol: AutorunsDisabled - (no CLSID) - (no file)

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

How is it running now? Any problems?

Thank you for your help. The computer is working better but now I have a pesky icon in my system tray that looks like the windows updater icon. When I hover over it or click it nothing happens. Also my browser is still painfully slow to open. When I read my gmail the browser(Firefox) gets very sluggish. I also wonder if it is normal for my zone labs suite to update so much. Sometimes it says it is updating two or three times in one night.

I'm not sure about zone labs suite as I have never used it.

Download WinPFind3U.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named WinPFind3u on your desktop.

Open the WinPFind3u folder and double-click on WinPFind3U.exe to start the program.
  • In the Processes group click ALL
  • In the Win32 Services group click ALL
  • In the Driver Services group click ALL
  • In the Registry group click ALL
  • In the Files Created Within group click 60 days Make sure Non-Microsoft only is UNCHECKED
  • In the Files Modified Within group select 30 days Make sure Non-Microsoft only is UNCHECKED
  • In the File String Search group select ALL
  • in the Additional scans sections please press select ALL
  • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  • The program will be scanning huge amounts of data so depending on your system it could take a long time to complete. Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Save that notepad file but click on the "Format" menu and make sure that "word wrap" is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.
Please post the resulting log here as an attachment.

  • Click on the orange Post a Reply! button
  • scroll down to Manage Attachments
  • Click in the box that says Upload File from your Computer
  • Click the Browse... button and find the file then click open
  • Click the Upload button
  • Wait until you see Current Attachment and your file name
  • Click on Close this window
  • Then submit the reply.

I hope I did this right. In the additional files section I unchecked "Non-Microsoft only. I had done it for every other section and just did not read your instructions carefully enough. If I need to do it again just tell me please. Thank you for your effort to help me.

I cannot remember if my slow loading browser started loading slowly before or after I installed TimeLeft. I am going to remove it from the startup group and see what happens. Do you know if there is a known problem with Gmail and graphics attachments? When I read my email on Gmail my firefox browser gets all clunky and usually crashes. I get a lot of mail from Yahoo groups and it gets really worrisome sometimes. Thank You for your help, again. Will definitely contribute to the forum

No I don't use GMail on line I have it sent to my Outlook. Perhaps a new thread in the web and e-mail forum will give you suggestions on that.

Let me know if the TimeLeft removal helps.

After removing TimeLeft from my startup list my boot up time is shorter but the browser loads super slowly still. I tried reading my Gmail in Opera and it works better. I do not like Opera"s download manager so I am going to try to set up the Orbit download manager to use with Opera.I still have that pesky icon in my system tray and I do not know why it is there. As I said it looks like the icon that goes there for a windows update.
Can you tell me why it is when I scan with SpyBot it always finds so much stuff. Seems like all of it is firefox related. I guess that is because I never use IE.
Thanks again for helping me.

I guess this is just a useless situation for me. Nothing seems to help with the slow browser loading. Maybe I expect too much since I only have 510 Megs of RAM. I do not know for sure but I think I installed Acronis 9.0 before the browser started loading so slowly. I think I need the ERUNT because Win2K doesn't create restore points.
