Is there any type of report that I can post on here for someone to help me make my computer faster? I think there are unnecessary files and I'm sure plenty of garbage that I can get rid of to speed it up....

    Thanks!!

Uninstall anything you dont use then use CCleaner.

slowness might mean something else but this will eliminate some possibles.

let us know and we'll take it from there.

Post a HijackThis log and we'll see what can be cleaned up.

    Go to this site http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/hijackthis.php?page=download.

    Click on 'Download HijackThis Installer'.

*Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop, or to the location where you normally download.
    *Double-click on HJTInstall.exe.
    *Click on Install.
*By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
*Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
*Click on the 'Do a system scan and save a logfile button'. It will scan and the log will open in Notepad.
*In Notepad go to Format and make sure 'Word Wrap' is not checked.
*Click on 'Edit > Select All' then click on 'Edit > Copy' (or Ctrl-C) to copy the entire contents of the log.
*Come back to this thread and Paste (or Ctrl-V) the log in your next reply.

*DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

I'll help you speed up that computer(which includes trimming down that bloated startup load), but I need you to answer some questions first.

    1. What's the brand name, model name, and model number of that computer?

    2. What's the processor speed?

    3. How much RAM does it have?

    4. How large is the hard drive and how much free/unused space is there?

    5. What peripherals(printer, camera, webcam, iPod, etc.) do you have connected to and use with that computer?

From what I've been able to determine, the IBM ThinkCenter 8187-D1U supports up to 4096 MB of RAM.

    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-51144.html

Since your computer is currently has only 512 MB of RAM(minus 8 MB that's dedicated to the on-board graphics controller), I suggest that you add another 512 MB of RAM.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

Go into MY COMPUTER, right-click the C drive icon, then click Properties.

A graphic pie chart will appear, along with the hard drive size and the amount of used space and free space.

I think that what youre looking at is someone else's hjt log that they posted on mine...

I would like to get more memory, I wrote down all the info on one of the "sticks" but dont know what I need to buy additional (via ebay)

I'm sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

nels69on posted a log after you posted your log, and I thought for a few minutes that you had posted 2 logs a few hours apart and had infected your computer during that time.

I had to request that his log and subsequent comments be removed from your thread to avoid confusion.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------

Besides your computer having only 512 MB of RAM, the hard drive is too full.

The combination of both, along with a bloated startup load, are all contributing to slow performance.

There's also the possibility that Disk Defragmenter won't run because there's not enough free/unused space.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

Let's get the startup load trimmed down a bit, then we'll work on reclaiming some hard drive space.

I'll give you instructions in a separate reply, so give me 15 - 20 minutes to get back to you.

I appreciate your help, I did see that other post...you are right, I can't defrag because there is only 8% free and it wants 15%. I have no clue what I did to make this thing so "full"!! About a year ago windows crashed on me, and the computer place gave me an extra stick of memory...it was faster for a bit....but now this!

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG and then click OK - Startup(tab).

    Remove the checkmark in:
(Note: .exe may or may not be present in the name.)

    IgfxTray C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxtray.exe

    HotKeysCmds C:\WINDOWS\system32\hkcmd.exe

    Persistence C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxpers.exe

    HP Software Update C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe

    QuickTime Task C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe

    Adobe Reader Speed Launcher C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe

    SunJavaUpdateSched C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe

    Messenger (Yahoo!) C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\YahooMessenger.exe

    Weather C:\Program Files\AWS\WeatherBug\Weather.exe

After you're done, click Apply - OK - Exit Without Restart.

Click Start - Run, type in SERVICES.MSC and then click OK.

Expand the window to see the list more clearly.

    Highlight and double-click on:

    Bonjour Service

    Intuit Update Service (IntuitUpdateService)

    Java Quick Starter (JavaQuickStarterService)

Change the setting from "Automatic"(if currently set there) to "Manual", then click Apply - OK.

After you're done, close the window and restart your computer.

When the small SCU window(see screenshot) appears during restart, ignore the message. Put a checkmark in that window and then click OK.

Run a HijackThis scan and then post that new log here.

    --------------------------------------------------------------

Yahoo Messenger and Weather can be manually started when you're ready to use them, but if you prefer to have them automatically load all the time, then leave them checked.

You decide if you need these 2 startup entries to load and run all the time.

If you don't, uncheck them and then restart.

You can also go back and recheck them if you decide you need them.

Go here and click the green icon to download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

Close all open windows and then install it. Make sure it updates its definition files during the install process.

Run a "quick scan" with it.

When the scan is finished, allow it to select and fix EVERYTHING it finds.

    Restart your computer afterwards.

Obtain a copy of its scan log and then post it here.
