So the problem is not so much that you cant download as is you cant access certain websites? Can you access any websites?

Are you able to download files through any other methods, such as FTP or MSN file transfer? Just wondering whether this is something that's directly related to your internet browser.

I'd recommend downloading a different browser and trying through that. Some spyware and malware can latch on to IE and make downloading an impossibility - although you should really be suffering from more than just download problems if that's the case.

Try Firefox or Safari and see if you still face problems using that.

You can't use Firefox to download MS updates unless you get the required IE add-in.

When did this start happening? Have you tried to do a system restore?

It may not be a good idea to go back that far unless absolutely necessary so let's check some other things first.

    • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
    • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
    • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
    • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
    • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
    • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
    • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
    • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
    • Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
    • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
    • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
    • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

I have a feeling it may be a setting somewhere but judging from your response I am not qualified enough to help you.

    On the other hand.
Download HJT via second computer, burn to disc and run on problem PC. Then Cookiegal can analyze.

Let's go with the system restore. If it doesn't fix the problem, it can be undone.

Be sure to log in with an account that has Administrator privileges.

Click Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools, and then click System Restore. System Restore starts.

On the Welcome to System Restore page, click Restore my computer to an earlier time (if it is not already selected), and then click Next.

On the Select a Restore Point page, click a date you think will be before it started and then click Next.

On the Confirm Restore Point Selection page click Next. System Restore restores the previous Windows XP configuration, and then restarts the computer.

Let us know how it goes please.
