Please help, I'm at my wits end...

I'm using WinXP and when I double click on My Computer, the torch comes up and says it is searching for items. No matter how long I leave it, it njust stays searching! Now, I've been able to get round this (this has been like it for a while now) and access all the folders I want simply by tying the folder address (ie c:\games) into the address bar. Now, however, I want to access my C drive to see how much space I actually have left, but I can't.

Secondly, when I try to click on the drop down arrow in any folders (the one on the address bar, shortcut key=F4), the folder locks and only ctrl+alt+del can unlock it.

Please please please can someone help, as I am pulling my hair out and I honestly do not know what to do. I have run both mcafee and AVG virus checkers, but to no avail! I'm stuck.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

    Try this:
Go to Start > Run and type in : "sfc /scannow" without the quotes.

This is a long shot, but do you happen to have any CDs or DVDs in any of your CD/DVD drives? Every once in a while I run into the same problem if there are any CDs loaded in the CD drive.

one of my friends suggested the /sfc thing, but i cant find my xp cd, and, rather annoyingly, i have this horrible feeling that it got thrown out with all of my old coverdiscs. I have this stupid habit of putting cds back in the wrong cases :(

And no, I don't have a cd in the drive :(

I suppose i'm stuck with it now tho :(

You don't need your Windows XP disk to run "sfc" (I don't believe so anyway - I could be wrong :D.)

Have you installed SP1? SP1 fixes a lot of these types of problems. If you haven't, I recommend doing so before trying anything else.

    Good luck.

ok, i found my xp cd...phew.

Ran sfc /scannow and it went through and then did nothing at the end? Don't know if this is correct. There was a progress bar, and when it had finished, it kinda did some hard drive activity then stopped? Is this correct?

I have installed xp service pack 1 too.

    I'm still stuck :(
