I have had this problem off and on before but it always works again, until recently. The drive will read cds and dvd movies without issue but when I insert a dvd data disk it doesn't read anything. I have updated the drivers and firmware i'm running Windows XP Pro and the drive is a NEC DVD-RW ND-3550A. I would appreciate any advice.

The data disks you are trying to use, are they disks that were written on by another computer? If so, what do you use to write your disks?

Could you give me an example of what you would describe as a data disk, please?

You can watch films, and you can install games, (I assume) so I am wondering what kind of disk it is that you can use.
