I have an older Dell Dimension XPS with my hard drive divided into four sections, C,D, E, and F. Drive C is full and I can not even get new email. Everyone says to move data from drive C to another section, but when I right click on the file or program I can't send it to one of the other sections, only to say My Briefcase or floppy drive or zip drive. Any suggestions will be appreciated

Right clicking on a file. choosing copying and then pasting it where you want it will work, but that's a lot of work. If the rest of your hard drive partitions are fairly empty a program like Partition Magic might be the way to go.

Thanks. I just noticed that I can compress my drive C and get more than double my space. This would solve my problem if there are not serious side effects such as slowing down my compuer, etc. Should I compress?

My hard drive is older and only 8 GB in four partitions of 2 GB each. Thus drive C, D, E, and F.

eew thats horrible..why would anyone partition an 8gb drive that way..

Are the other drives(sections) completely empty??

If so, I would use Partition Magic to combine all the sections into one.

If you really need them split that way you can move folders from C to one of the other sections by doing the following:

    1. Open My Computer
    2. double click the C drive to open a window
    3. double click the other drive in My Computer you wish to move the data to
    4. you should now have two windows open. one for C, and one for (D,E, or F)
    5. now all you need to do is right-click on a folder or file in the C window and drag it to the other window. When you let go of the mouse button, it will ask if you want to Copy or Move. Select Move. This will copy the data over and delete it from the C drive.

I'd suggest maybe getting a bigger hard drive in the not too distant future too. :) A nice 20 or 40Gb drive should be pretty cheap.

Do not move program folders or the programs may not run correctly. Only move your data.

Thanks for all your input. It looks like Partition Magic is the way to go or maybe replace this old hard drive with a new 20GB instead of buying Partition Magic.
This was my first computer and Dell set it up that way saying it would be faster...Now they know nothing.
I had to go back to this older PC as my laptop has a Trojan horse Dialer virus which has captured it and I just can not get rid of it. AVG antivirus says it is not there as well as Spyhunter. but as soon as I hook onto the internet it replaces my home page with a Casino Site and I can do nothing, can't close it or go to any othr site.

Can you backup the important data to CDR?

Then you could delete all those small partitions and just make one big partition.

What is CDR? How would I delete the small partitions? One suggestion from the tech rep at my ISP was to wipe everything clan by reformatting my hard drive and then reinstalling Windows which he said would delte the partitions. What do you guys think?

As a temp fix, the Recycle Bin takes 10% of a hard drive. Right click on the icon, choose Properties, and lower the bin space.

Have you run Disk Clean UP? That would get rid of your temporary files and clean those out. And he's right about the recycle bin. Also are there ANY programs you are NOT using at all or not using much? And can uninstall? If you can because you either have the disk to install it again at a later date or can download it from online later, UNINSTALL it for now.

As for your laptop, I bet the people in security here could help. Once you get some space, download INTO one of the other drives (D or E) a copy of AdAware and Spybot and HiJack This and put them on floppies so that you can put them on your laptop, ok? Use these links:

    http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ AdAware

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2471 Spybot

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/...is1981_beta.zip (HiJackThis one of these two)

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/...is1981_beta.zip (HiJackThis one of these two)

Since the laptop is a separate issue, when you do get the reports you need, post them in the security forum. And this is what you will need to do:

If you do the first part on your current computer and the second on your laptop, I think you will be in business. Liz

Thanks for all your input. Trojan Horse solved by going to www.wolfontheloose.com and downloading CWShredder which fixed my "Cool Web Search" Trojan Horse. I also updated IE and I regained control of my computer. This is a great site with a lot of help. I did also download and run Spy-Bot and AdAware.
First problem, my small hard drive full, I still have. I will take your suggestiona d try to find a new larger hard drive that will fit my old computer instead of trying Partition magic. I'll do whatever is cost effective. Again, many thanks. Bill
