Help please. My Internet will disconnect & then reconnect constantly. I have 2 laptops & they are both on my home network & I have no trouble with the other one so I assume there is nothing wrong with both the Internet service & router. The laptop with the problem is an acer/aspire 5720z. The Wireless Network Adapter is a Atheros AR5007EG. When I go to the Adapter Properties the status reads "The device is working properly". When I go to Control Panel>Network & Sharing Center my Wireless Network Connection Signal Strength reads Excellent. Any help would be appreciated. The operating system is Windows Vista Home Premium.

I`ve experienced a few problems with the Atheros chip in the past and I found the only way past it at the time was to disable it and plug in a USB dongle which fixed the problem.

Another thing you could try is to reset the TCP/IP stack using the following method;

Start, Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt pressing Enter after each line.
Type: netsh winsock reset catalog
Type: netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log
Type: netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log
Reboot the machine.

Thanks for your reply. I gave your command prompt instructions a try & it seemed to work for awhile but then after about 15 minutes it reverted back to the same problem. Does that make any sense?

would you post the following ipconfig /all and PING tests information when its working and repeat ALL test when it disconnects

The Wireless Network Adapter is a Atheros AR5007EG.
we are seeing a lot of issues with this adapter - usually with wireless security - log into the router and disable the security and lets see if that resolves the issue, if so then an re-install / update of the driver may help it work with security re-enabled

also lets see an xirrus screen shot - see if its possibly wireless interference

------------------------------------------------------------------------
{ipconfig /all}
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here
We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all post back the results here
-> Start
-> (XP - enter the following in the RUN box)
cmd /k ipconfig /all
-> (Vista or Windows 7 - enter the following in the Search box)
cmd /k ipconfig /all

A black box will appear on the screen -
rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy

then reply here and
control key + V to paste
------------------------------------------------------------------------
{Ping Tests}
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here

Start> Run {search bar in Vista}> CMD to open a DOS window and type:

Type the following command
Ping {plus the number thats shown against the default gateway shown in above ipconfig /all}
Post back the results
rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

Type the following command
Ping google.com
Post back the results
rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

Type the following command
Ping 209.183.226.152
post back results
rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

{run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector} Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC

http://www.xirrus.com/library/wifitools.php
Direct link to the program is here http://www.xirrus.com/library/wifi_download_redirect.php
Then run and install the program
if you get an error - You need NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.

Run the program

post a screen shot of the program running - if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information, and also post which network "Adapter Name" (1st column) is yours on the list

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.
To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.

Thanks for your reply. I disabled my router security but I then could not get on the Internet to do any of your suggestions. I then called Belkin & spent an hour getting back on line. While on the phone with Belkin he made me enable my security again so trying to see if things work OK while my security is disabled didn't happen & I don't want to mess with trying it again. I did update my Belkin Firmware but I think it was the most up to-date version anyway.

As for your other suggestions, because it disconnects & reconnects so quickly I don't think I would have enough time to run any of those test while it's disconnected. The only way I know it's disconnected is when I'm playing poker & a screen pops up saying I've been disconnected & it then reconnects automatically. It only seems to disconnect for 5 to 10 seconds.

Thanks for trying to help though!!
