I have six USB ports. One of the ports in the back of my CPU work when I plug my dell printer in it. I plug a flash drive in the same port, the cpu recognizes it, but it does not show up in my computer. I have uninstalled and reinstalled all usb ports and that did not fix it. I tried all of my 6 usb ports with this flash drive and I get the same problem, it is recognized but I cannot see it in my computer. I cannot save to it or retrieve files. I also have an ipod shuffle and I get the same problem. My itunes will not recognize my shuffle.

Here is what is killing me...they work on my laptop, with no problems whatsoever. I tried the "Fix.reg" file I found in one of these threads and that did not work. I also repaired my windows xp because I kept receiving an error each time I would access my device manager. I hope someone has a solution for me. Thank you guys. P.S. I did run a virus scanner and a anti-spyware program and I have no viruses well atleast no viruses are found. I am using Computer Associates Software EZ trust. It is a full subscription with live updates that Verizon gave me. Sorry to ramble on forever. Here is my Hi Jack this File:

Have you tried going into Computer Management, Disk Management and assigning it a drive letter?

Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Administrative tools, computer management, under Storage click on Disk Management. Do you see the flash drive? if so right click on it and select Change Drive Letter and Paths...

Thank you that worked. I would like to avoid having to do this each time. Please let me know of any other solutions.

If possible establish the usb port for each usb item you have and try to keep them in those ports. That usually works out fine.

This is not solved. Because I, in the past, was able to plug in anything into my usb ports and not have to assign a drive or anything like that.

It is acting up again, my usb ports. I would like to really solve this problem I have because each time I plug in my flash drive I need to assign it a drive. I am running out of drives. It will not accept the same drive each time.

Do you have external USB drives that are perhaps confusing things?

No I do not. I did a repair on my machine because I could not access my device manager. The repair worked great! But ever since then, my USB ports have not worked properly. I really do not want to repair again, unless I really have to because it puts everthing back into windows xp service pack 1. I updated my windows to service pack 2. I ran all current updates and I have all the current updates. I really do not know what to do.

When it happens, have you tried rebooting? Mine does that sometimes, but rebooting always solves the problem.

After the repair install, did you reload the motherboard drivers?
