I'm running Windows XP SP3 with 2 GB RAM. With the software I usually use, my RAM utilization has consistently been around 1.5 GB in the past. Since about a week ago this has suddenly jumped to a level of around 2.2 GB for no apparent reason.

I generally keep an eye on the Task Manager's Processes tab sorted by Mem Usage, but nothing new has showed up there that comes remotely close to accounting for the change. I feel that I lack a full picture of how RAM is being utilized, since the processes on the Processes tab account for well under 1 GB.

How can I figure out what's using up the additional memory? Are there any utilities that will show a full accounting of RAM utilization, with a breakdown of how much RAM each piece of software is using (including but also extending beyond the processes listed in the Task Manager Processes tab) ?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

The Task manager has full information about RAM usage by all processes and there is nothing additional that can be found. It is all there, though you may need to enable more columns. The combined use of all the processes and caches gives the total in use.

If you have 2 GB of RAM, your usage cannot have jumped to 2.2 GB unless you are including virtual memory. Can you post a picture of processes and memory?

Have you been using any memory-intensive programs like image or video editors? Some of them require a large swath of contiguous RAM to operate.

Are you experiencing any problems due to the RAM usage? Of course, ideally, we would like all our RAM to be in use all the time. So use is good, so long as it can be freed for other purposes when necessary. That is why "memory optimizers" inevitably run counter to the goal of as much usage as possible and end up slowing the machine down (not to mention the app's own CPU usage that is added to the mix).

There are many tools available. Too many, really, since few people are qualified to assess their meaning. A RaMMap is available from Sysinternals.

1.5 GB's is a very unusual amount for XP to be using under normal circumstances. It is much higher than any XP machine I have ever seen, at least. I'd be curious about what is using that much and how.

Though the Task Manager reports RAM usage accurately, it is sometimes unclear how things are defined. Other RAM usage tools may be easier to understand. You might find that Process Hacker (Allows editing memory, shows hidden processes, similar to Sysinternals Process Explorer with more features - can replace normal Task Manager) is a better Task Manager and shows more details.

Thanks for your response and questions. My answers follow below - please let me know if you can suggest anything further.

Can you advise which columns I should enable for this? Is there a way to view the amount of RAM allocated to the caches?

Correct, I believe that the machine is using virtual memory. I have attached a screenshot. Please note that I have two user accounts running on the machine that I use for different purposes and switch back and forth between. So I have double instances of various applications running, but this was already the case before this problem.

Have you been using any memory-intensive programs like image or video editors? Some of them require a large swath of contiguous RAM to operate.
No, I haven't.

Are you experiencing any problems due to the RAM usage?
My system slows down when memory usage exceeds the physical RAM, I'm guessing because of virtual memory swapping to the disk.

A RaMMap is available from Sysinternals.
It apparently doesn't work for XP: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/ff700229 Are there any other good options?

(Edit: Just noticed your recommendation to use Process Hacker - not sure how I overlooked that earlier. I'll check it out, and thanks for the advice.)

That's probably because of the two user accounts as described above.

Caching is not a very transparent process in Windows. Sometimes, you have to find the amount by process of elimination. So I know of no explicit way to measure what is used.

Sorry about the RaMMap. I thought it was older than that.

Yes, the dual accounts may account for it. I haven't done that often, but with a single XP account, even with 2 GB's of RAM installed, I never saw usage go over 480 MB's, even when I pushed it by starting 40 programs. So, it still seems high, but not ridiculously so.

If you look under the View menu and look at the columns that are available for addition, you will see many related to memory. The highest one (aside from the one that shows the historical high point) is the allocated amount, though that does not mean that it is all in use (working set). Though replete with data, it may not actually be a great deal of help unless something stands out by its degree of being unusual.

You can get some more memory data at a command prompt:

mem /debug

Though it seems unlikely, if you start up Process Hacker, you can scan for hidden processes. Malware may not show up in the Task Manager and PH has 2 methods of searching for them, one "brute-force" method actually scans all process ID's to see if there is a process attached to them even if they do not show up in Task Manager. Unfortunately, infections are always a possibility these days. Nearly every machine I work on, when scanned while Windows is not running, has had some form of hidden infection, may times showing absolutely nothing once it has taken control of the kernel in Windows.

XP handles memory very well. I don't think that the quest ought to be looking for examples of mismanagement so much as a "memory leak" or excessive memory use due to a poorly-constructed app. A program whose RAM use starts out normally and then gradually climbs during runtime, whether being used or not, is often what is found.

So you are saying that absolutely nothing has changed on this computer to account for the memory usage? No windows updates or virus defs have been applied? Something has to account for it. Have you looked at processes for every user and added the column list to be viewed? I think it is under options.

VMMap shows much the same information as RaMMap and works on XP (per process, when you have suspects for the lineup).

Yikes! 129 running processes? That's one massive startup load.

Your computer must be running like a turtle and taking a long time to start up and settle down.

Do you know how to submit a HiJackThis log here?

Good catch there, flavallee. I thought I had the most of anyone, but it's only 113!

But remember that he has 2 accounts running, and then 129 almost seems like too little. :D

@Elvandil: Thank you for the advice, that's very helpful. I will try out your suggestions and see what I come up with. Much appreciated.

@Rockn: Thanks for your response. Yes, various things have changed on the computer as you suggest with updates and such. The problem is that I'm not sure which change caused the issue (as I only gradually noticed the issue and am not sure precisely when it started), which is why I was looking for diagnostic tools. Yes, I have checked the processes for all users with the user column displayed, but that unfortunately didn't yield any insight.

From the little that I can see in that screenshot, it's pretty obvious that several programs are auto-starting and running in the background that don't need to be doing so.

I bet I can trim down that number by half or more. ;)

Definitely. I didn't mean to imply that cleaning was not a good idea. Just that with 2 accounts, it is not so extreme as it first appears. :D

parmosuna:

If you would like me to assist you with that massively-bloated startup load in that computer, do the following in the order listed:

--------------------------------------------------------

Go here and click the green "Download latest version" link to download and save HiJackThis 2.0.4.

After it's been downloaded and saved, close all open windows first, then double-click the saved file to install it.

Allow it to install in its default location - C:\Program Files.

After it's been installed, start it and then click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

When the scan is finished in less than 30 seconds, a log file will appear.

Save that log file.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire log file here.

--------------------------------------------------------

Start HiJackThis, but don't run a scan.

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

Click on the "Save List" button.

Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere.

It'll then open in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire file here.

Your HiJackThis log is too difficult to read in the manner that you submitted it.

Open Notepad, then make sure "Format - Word Wrap" is selected, then close it.

Start HiJackThis and run a new scan, then save the new log in Notepad, then submit it here.

-----------------------------------------------

While you're doing that, I'm going to review your uninstall_list.txt file.

There are a number of programs and add-ons that need to be uninstalled, updated, or replaced.

It's going to take me several minutes to do that, so I'll get back to you in a separate reply before I shut down my computer for the night.

I'm going to start from the top and work down the list and advise you which ones to uninstall, update, or replace.
If you have any questions or comments about any of them, feel free to tell me.

Adobe Flash Player ActiveX should be updated to Adobe Flash Player ActiveX 10.3.181.34

Apple Software Update is unneeded and can be uninstalled.

Belarc Advisor 7.2 should be updated to Belarc Advisor 8.2.1.7
If you no longer need or use it, uninstall it instead.

Diskeeper Lite is unneeded and can be uninstalled.
The built-in Disk Defragmenter does fine.

Java(TM) 6 Update 23 should be updated to Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0.26(6 Update 26)

Mozilla Firefox 3.6.18 should be updated to Mozilla Firefox 3.6.19

PC-Doctor 5 For Windows is very outdated and unneeded and can be uninstalled.

Windows Defender needs to be uninstalled because it does a poor job of malware/spyware protection.
Download and install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.51.1.1800 and SUPERAntiSpyware 4.56.0.1000 to replace it.
They're free and user-friendly and do a good job and are well recommended here.

Yahoo! Install Manager is unneeded and can be uninstalled.
