Mysterious Trojan Horse

Several days ago my daily system backup (using Dantz Retrospect 6.5) was interrupted by a virus alert in the form of a Norton AntiVirus popup: "(High Risk)NAV has detected a virus... Object Name: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32: lnaa.dll:$DATA Virus Name: Download.Fugif Action Taken: Unable to repair this file."

From the Symantec Security Response website: "Download.Fugif is a Trojan horse that downloads remote files from predetermined Web sites. The Trojan uses alternate data streams to hide its presence on the compromised computer."

I subsequently ran a system scan with NAV resulting in no viruses found. Furthermore, there was no sign of the infected file(lnaa.dll) after manually inspecting the System32 directory.

Since then I receive the same alert from Norton AntiVirus during each daily backup.

Can anyone shed some light??

I had the same thought (its probably in the restore files), but since my backups are stored on an external hard drive, the alert popup should show that as the source and not the system root directory, no?

BTW, I already use Spybot, Ad-Aware, & Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta as well as Zone Alarm Pro...

Please do this:

First create a permanent folder somewhere like in My Documents and name it Hijack This.

Now Click here to download Hijack This. Download it and click "Save". Save it to the Hijack This folder you just created.

Click on Hijackthis.exe to launch the program. Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log. Click "Save" to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.

Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.

DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

First please do this:

Click on My Computer. Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

Go to the forum here and upload the C:\Windows\System32\LMIinit.dll file.

Here are the directions for uploading the file:

Just click "New Topic", fill in the needed details and post a link to your thread here. Click the "Browse" button. Navigate to the file on your computer. When the file is listed in the window click "Post" to upload the file.

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these. Close ALL windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Restart your computer.


Go here and do an online virus scan. Choose "Complete Scan" and select all drives to scan.

When the scan is finished, anything that it cannot clean have it delete it. Click "Print Report". The report will open in your browser. Go to File > Save As and save the file to your desktop. Under "Save as type" click the dropdown menu and choose "Text file (*.txt) and save it as a text file.

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the report from the Housecall scan
