I found this forum as a result of being desperate! This is my first post and I hope someone can help. I did try searching before posting to no avail.
I have been running NAV 2002 with no problems. When Blaster was making its rounds, I installed Zone Alarm Free. About two weeks ago, it hosed up on me and I couldn't uninstall it, TrueVector would not shut down. I finally got TV shut down, ZA uninstalled. Then NAV would not stay running. I uninstalled/reinstalled according to all help docs on their site. It still did not stay running. I purchased NAV 2004 and installed; same problem. Once again, I completely uninstalled, deleting registry keys and values, clean boot reinstalled. It runs when running clean or in safe mode. But when booting normally, Auto protect starts with Windows but then shuts down. I try to launch the program, it launches and then shuts down within 20 seconds. Also, regedit also will not stay running in normal mode. It will in safe or clean mode.
What can I do to correct this?

Let's have a look at what is running in the background. I have a feling you may have a virus/trojan/sorm hidding in there some place. Some of the more recent ones try to disable your firewall and antivirus programs.

Go to http://tomcoyote.org/hjt/ and download HiJackThis. Use Winzip to unzip it, then install and run it. To run, click the “Scan” button. When it's done the "Scan" button changes to "Save Log". Save the log file it creates (it should open in Notepad at that point). Copy and paste the results in your next post. Most of what it finds is harmless, so do not do anything yet. Someone will be glad to help you sort out any of the baddies that may be in there.

Thank you. I've seen a lot of the postings refer to HiJack This. I'm already on their site and will download, install and run it. I'll probably post sometime tomorrow as I've been at this a long time today. Thanks for the direction!

In Hijack This, check ALL of the following items. Double check so as to be sure not to miss a single one.
Next, close all browser Windows, and have HT fix all checked.

Next reboot into Safe Mode and remove the following files and folders that are bolded

C:\WINDOWS\Csrss.exe

See here http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406 for how to start in safe mode if you don't know how.

Reboot into normal mode

Now download Spybot - Search & Destroy (if you haven't got the program installed already)

After installing, first press Online, and search for, put a check mark at, and install all updates.

Next, close all Internet Explorer windows, hit 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove/fix all it finds that are in RED

Reboot

Last, run HJT again and post your log again to see if anything was missed.

Thanks

Nitehawk, Thanks so much for your help thus far. It seems to be working. Here is the lastest log from Hijack This. My Norton Auto protect is now running in my system tray. When I fixed the above mentioned items, it put backup icons all over my desktop. What can I do with those?

Also, now when I am navigating around this site, I get the following Spybot message: Spybot-S&D reports that you want to download "Avenue A, Inc.". This is a known threat. Do you want to BLOCK this download?
I answer yes everytime. But I still keep getting the message. What should I do?

On the desktop icon problem, I am assuming that when you d/l'ed HJT you placed it ON and ran it FROM your desktop. HJT will create backups in the folder from which it was run. In this case, your desktop. Create a new folder for HiJack This.

In my case I have a folder called "Utilities" then under that there is a folder for HJT. Then within the HJT folder is another one for backups.

Create the new folders and place HJT and it's backups in their respective folders.

As for Spybot and Avenue A, open SpyBot and click on Immunize, then at the bottom of that screen change it to "Block all Bad Pages Silently". That should do it for you. (y)

Thank you, NiteHawk, and everyone at Techguy.org. You were very helpful. You fixed in a few hours a problem that I had been struggling with for weeks. I'm going to donate to the site to keep it running, because I know I'll need it again.
Once again, thank you very much.
