I am trying to install a program that needs 2 Gigabytes of contiguous disk space. I have tried defragmenting the drive; but, athough it has 4.5 Gigs of free space, it has only about 550 Megs of contiguous free space.

I need a defragmenter that will move all files into a contiguous area so I have enough contiguous free space.

What's a really good defragmenter that will do it?

I could take the drive to another machine, move all its files to another drive and then move them back; but, that's too much trouble. But, I'll do it if I have to.

Not sure if this utility can do as you describe but you might try it :

    Diskeeper :

Though it will load in your startup as it will want to run every day so just go into MSCONFIG and untick the entry to avoid that.

I've used PartitionMagic to shrink a partition to pack all the files together, then reexpanded the partition to original size.

I imagine Ranish Partition Manager would do the same thing.

Actually xp has diskeeper lite as its own so I would suggest doing so in safe mode and be sure to do a disk cleanup first.
