I have wifi built into my 'Toshiba laptop I purchased this year. Not every place has wifi and some places have weak signals.

What's the best way increase my wifi signal range?

I've heard about a wifi network usb card. Is this it? What kinds of distances are they good for?

i will move to networking, where you may get more answers -
I have been playing for the alst few days with a Belkin USB adapter and a Edimax USB adapter - the Edimax is much better than the Belkin picking up my router wireless signals around the house - it comes with about a meter extension cable and so you can position it independant to the laptop position, which I found helped a lot

I'm UK based
I purchased from here - took 3 days to arrive http://www.amazon.co.uk/Edimax-EW-7711UAN-150mbs-Wireless-Adapter/dp/B001KOTDDU
Product details http://www.edimax.co.uk/en/produce_detail.php?pd_id=261&pl1_id=1&pl2_id=44

The Belkin came from Comet in UK http://www.belkin.com/iwcatproductpage.process?product_id=179211

One adapter that I've had good luck with is a Rosewill RNX-G1 USB Wireless Adapter. It's feature is that is has a removable antenna and will accommodate replacement antennas. Paired with this Hawking [HAI7SIP] Hi-Gain 7dBi Omni-Directional Antenna, it'll give you significantly more range than the internal wireless adapter. You can also use directional antennas for even more range like this Hawking [HAI15SC] Hi-Gain 15dBi Corner Antenna. That's the one I use with this adapter, it really reaches out. :)
