A couple weeks ago Nortons AV notified me that 2 viruses were located and quarantined ([email protected] and Peacomm.Trojan)I deleted the files and a new scan showed my computer is free of viruses. A few days ago I started having problems with my computer. Slow speed and half the time when I try to go to a web page or click on a site from another web page it will just go to a white page with the little XP progess flag in the upper right corner waving and it will continue for several minutes or it will just stop and go to an error page or the dell home page stating unable to find the web site.(I have google as my home web page.) Sometimes it works fine. It seems the longer I'm on the net or the more pages I have open, the worse it is. Can someone help me. This is the first problem I've had with this computer (Dell XPS 400 Windows XP) and I've only had it for a year. Hi hijackthis is listed below. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hi, sackpac :)

There is no sign of evident malware in your log.

  1. Enter your Control Panel and double-click on Network Connections
  2. Then right click on your Default Connection
    • Usually Local Area Connection for Cable and DSL, or AOL Connection.
  3. Left click on Properties
  4. Double-Click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item
  5. Select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS Servers Automatically
  6. Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen
  7. Restart the computer
Go to Start->Run->Type CMD and click Ok. The MSDOS Window will be displayed. At the command prompt, type the following and press Enter after each line:

ipconfig /flushdns (The space between g and / is needed)
Exit

Restart the computer.

That should clear your DNS resolver. Let us know if that improves the performance online.

I tried what you said and at first it improved the speed a little but the more pages I went to, the longer it would take until finally the progress bar at the lower right task bar would go to 2 bars then just stop completely and all I have is a white screen with task bars at top and bottom. I have a cable connection and normally web pages open instantly.

Hi, sackpac :)

Lets take a deeper look:

Download ComboFix from Here or Here. to your Desktop.

Reboot to Safe mode:

Restart your computer and begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard just before Windows starts to load. If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.

Perform the following actions in Safe Mode.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Here are some routine maintenance practices that you should do on a regular basis to keep your machine running efficiently. Hopefully going through these steps will solve the problems you are having:

Disk Cleanup:

http://www.theeldergeek.com/disk_cleanup_utility.htm

Defrag your HD:

http://artsweb.bham.ac.uk/artsit/Info/Guides/GoodPractice/defrag-win2kxp.htm

Run chkdsk:

To use Chkdsk, click Start and My Computer. Right-click the hard drive you want to check, and click Properties. Select the Tools tab and click Check Now. Check both boxes. Click Start. You'll get a message that the computer must be rebooted to run a complete check. Click Yes and reboot. Chkdsk will take awhile, so run it when you don't need to use the computer for something else.

Remove unnecessary startups

This should be done through the System Configuration Utility. Go to Start > Run and type in msconfig.
Click OK or hit the Enter key.

Click on the "Startup" tab and remove the check by the items that you have determined are unnecessary. Click "Apply" then "Close"

You will be prompted to restart. Go ahead and restart.

Upon restart you will be confronted with a dialogue box warning about running in selective startup. Just ignore that message and put a check in the box by "Don't show me this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" and click "OK". You will not be bothered by the message again.

Keep in mind that some entries will be re-enabled in the startups each time you use that particular program. Therefore, you will have to find the option in that programs preferences that says something like "Load with Windows" or "Run when Windows Starts" and disable that option.

Go here for info on msconfig:

Pacs Portal

You can look up the startups at the following links to help determine what is needed and what is not:

ok, I checked the show hidden files and folders then went to Spy Killer Forum to post the message but when I tried to attach the file there was no "b5504354cf.sys" listed under c:\windows\system32. I even performed a search on my computer with "search hidden files and folders" selected and it did not locate it either. However last night I ran CCleaner, ad-aware, Spybot S&D, windows defender, Prevx1 and AVG. Spybot found 6 items and removed but everything else was clean. My computer worked a little better but continues to redirect. For example, when I went clicked on the Spy Killer Forum link from your message and started posting a message it would redirect me to the Dell search page. When I clicked the back button it would return to my message but I had to retype everything. Finally, when I went to enter information on the message post I clicked on the stop (red X) button on my tool bar and then I had no problem. Here is my most recent HIJACKTHIS:

Hi, sackpac :)

While TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent objects to be removed. Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once we have finished..
  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
  • Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the "Tools" menu.
  • Click "Resident".
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.
Download the enclosed file and extract its contents to the desktop. It is a batch file. Once extracted doubleclick on the batch file and post the contents of the log it will create.

Hi, sackpac.:)

Before you continue, please move Hjackthis to a permanent location. You can use the following utility to do so.

  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.

If the above link is broken, try this link. Make sure you extract and save the Hijackthis.exe file in a Permanent folder, rather than a Temp folder.

Make sure TeaTimer is disable.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell.com
O16 - DPF: {9522B3FB-7A2B-4646-8AF6-36E7F593073C} (cpbrkpie Control) - http://a19.g.akamai.net/7/19/7125/14...2/cpbrkpie.cab

Now close all windows and browsers, other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Close Hijackthis.

Restart the computer and test. Do not allow Spybot to undo this.

Keep me posted.

You ROCK!! Since my restart I have had no problems. I don't know what caused all the problems but I'm clean. Thank you so much!

%$^@## That was short lived ( I don't know what happened but I didn't have any troubles for a good half hour, came back later and tried to use the internet and it was considerably slower in searches. Certain sites work fine but when I try to search from google it boggs down and won't even go to the google page. When I try to refresh it goes to "the page cannot be displayed" and that I may need to adjust my browser settings then explains how to diagnose connection problems. I tried it but it didn't make a difference. I switched to msn home page and can at least get there and go to a few pages fine but it's non responsive going to other pages. For example I searched Nike from MSN and got many results but when I clicked on academysports.com it went to the blank white page and just stopped. I refreshed and was sent to the "page can't be displayed." Any reason my computer is so inconsistent?

Hi, sackpac :)

Open Notepad. Select File, then Open. Copy and paste the following location on the File Name section and click Open.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\HOSTS

That will open your HOSTS file. Copy and paste its contents in a reply, along with a Hijackthis log.

Here it is:

# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.

# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.

Hi, sackpac :)

You seem to be using two (2) antivirus, Prevx1 and Norton. Are you? If you do, you must remove one of them.

Go to Start->Run, type CMD and click OK. The MSDOS prompt will be displayed. Type the following and type the results on your next reply:

Ping www.Google.com
