    Hello, I recently found out that my screen name on AIM is sending people on my buddy list viruses. My computer is not running as well now either. I don't know why it is happening. I have included a HiJackThis log so here you go. Thanks for anything you can do.

    Hi, You have the "Eggdrop" infection- and possibly another IRCbot worm

    This installs a Service that needs to be shut down, but you do that after detection of just which one it's running as.

    Here is a page about it, please do not let it scare you, it's a simple removal process, but it does involve editing the Registry...if you do it the way shown. May not need to be, let me see if there is a removal tool available for you, back in a sec.

    Eggdrop info

    And, don't rush madly off to edit your Registry just yet, unless you are experienced with that...you might not need to at all.

    STINGER removal tool by McAfee

    ~~~~OR this should remove it~~~~~~
    Try SwatIt!, free tool, should detect this infection.
    At the page below, the download button on far right is the free trial you want, but be sure you read and follow the directions on the page you see next, you have to Update the removal tool before running it.
    http://swatit.org/download.html
    Run an online antivirus scanner:
    http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
    http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan
    http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
    Be sure you choose to scan ALL your hard drives, and if anything is found infected, and it cannot clean it, delete it.
    At the end, the scanner will have a Report or Results, and a way for you to SAVE the Report, please do that and include it along with a new HJT log in your next reply here.
    Hi, Good work, but not clean just yet. I asked for scan results from anything you ran, you didn't post any.
    the msclean.exe is still showing.
    Save these directions by copy/paste into a blank Notepad text file, save to the desktop, Or, print this out. These posts and the Internet will not be working while you are in Safe Mode.!
    You will need to download this> Killbox (it's number 19 in list)
    Download it to the desktop, unzip it by starting the file up, extract to the desktop . Don't touch any of the buttons, we will do that later in Safe Mode.
    **Restart your computer into safe mode now. (Tapping F8 at the first black screen) Select Safe Mode Only from the startup list.
    ***Perform the following steps in safe mode:
    **Now, start Hijackthis, and do a new scan, no need to save a log, just look for this entry and "fix" it if it is there:
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [msclean] C:\WINDOWS\msclean.exe
    ***Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Now put a tick by Standard File Kill. In the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste the following line
    C:\WINDOWS\msclean.exe
    then click on the button that has the red circle with the X in the middle after you enter that file. It will ask for confimation to delete the file. Click Yes.
    Note: It is possible that Killbox will tell you that the file does not exist. If that happens, just continue on- the file may not be there, we are just making sure it is deleted if it is.
    Exit the Killbox.
    Restart, and do this Panda online antivirus/antispyware scan (link to it is down below) and please>>>SAVE the results and post the contents of the file named activescan.txt here into your next reply! It won't let you do anything until the full scan finishes, and be sure to pick the AUTOCLEAN checkbox, and scan MY COMPUTER. If nothing absolutely nothing is found, no need to post except the new Hijackthis log, one you just made in Normal Mode, OK?
    Hello again! Thank you for all of your help. I deleted the msclean entry in hijackthis and in killbox. I then ran the pandasoftware and this is the report:
    Hi, Your log is clean now. I see Panda disinfected at least two bugs, so that is good.
    I suggest we get this and do what it says below:
    *Download Cleanup from Here
    • A window will open and choose SAVE, then DESKTOP as the destination.
    • On your Desktop, click on Cleanup40.exe icon.
    • Then, click RUN and place a checkmark beside "I Agree"
    • Then click NEXT followed by START and OK.
    • A window will appear with many choices, keep all the defaults as set when the Slide Bar to the left is set to Standard Quality.
    • Click OK
    • DO NOT RUN IT YET-we will use it later in Safe Mode
    Restart your computer into safe mode now. Perform the following steps in safe mode:
    How to get to Safe Mode in XP:
    Restart your computer.
    Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
    Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter
    * Run Cleanup:
    • Click on the "Cleanup" button and let it run.
    • Once its done, close the program.
    No need for new HJT log after that but you can if you want.
    The next step is to turn off System Restore, that flushes all infected Restore Points off the computer. You then retart, and turn Restore back on, and make a new Restore Point.
    Please do the following:
    Turn off System Restore:
    On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    Check Turn off System Restore.
    Click Apply, and then click OK.Wait for hourglass to stop and it says
    "Turned Off"
    Restart your computer, turn System Restore back on and create a restore point.
    To create a restore point:
    Single-click Start and point to All Programs.
    Mouse over Accessories, then System Tools, and select System Restore.
    In the System Restore wizard, select the box next the text labeled "Create a restore point" and click the Next button.
    Type a description for your new restore point. Something like "After trojan/spyware cleanup". Click Create and you're done.
    The C:\Submit! folder that Killbox makes can be deleted, so can the program itself, there is no uninstaller, just right click and delete the entire Killbox folder if you like.
    Antivirus scans find things in the Submit! folder as they are backups of the malware that sometimes we ask you to send in so they can be added to antivirus detections...but yours has already, so you can safely delete the entire folder, or keep it.
    I ran Cleanup40 and it deleted thousands of files. But when I restarted my computer afterwards, everything is messed up in windows. There is no Start button in the bottom right. The whole bottom taskbar is gray now and blank. The quickstart icons in the bottom right are still there, though. Internet Explorer seems to have been altered drastically. It looks nothing like what I had and is very messed up. Mostly all of the stuff on the top is missing. Please let me know what to do. Thanks.
    Hi, CleanUp was to be run in Safe Mode, if you did that, something must have been wrong someplace, the program deletes temp files, Temporary Internet Files, etc....if the settings were not changed, it should not have affected the computer by this cleanup....
    If you have not restarted, try that first, if it is still looking funny, do this:
    Try System Restore:
    Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools> System Restore
    Choose a Restore date-- you will probably only have todays... and when it comes back up and is working OK< we can start over....
    Very sorry this happened, CleanUp is a tool we use every day here! Let me know if you did not create the new Restore Point...
    I cannot do a system restore because I have no Start menu. I also do not have any icons on the desktop that will help for that either (My Computer, Control Panel, etc). When I downloaded that .reg file, nothing happened when I clicked on it. I tried saving it multiple times but it did not work. All that I have on the top of my internet explorer brorswer are back, search, favorites, half of a Microsoft Word icon, and half of a Windows Messenger icon. They are all in weird places and are formatted wrong. Let me know what I can do.
    Ok I realized I could get into the start menu by hitting the windows button on my keyboard. This still does not help me though because instead of the normal start menu I get a gray box in the upper left corner thats mostly empty except for the All Programs tab. Also, I did the cleanup in safemode. Thanks.
    Try starting or restarting and tap the F8 key several times at the first screen, you should get the Advanced Startup menu, first try Last Known Good Configuration (move to that line with your up or down arrow key) and hit Enter.
    Also, you might be able to do this:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/getstarted/ballew_03may19.mspx
    """"If System Restore doesn't work in Normal Mode, it might work in Safe Mode. To use System Restore in Safe Mode, press the F8 key during reboot and choose Safe Mode. When your computer starts in either Safe Mode or Normal Mode, System Restore can be used to capture a working previous state. System Restore can't be opened unless the system is bootable into one of these modes."""
    _ _ _ _ _
    If that does not work, try using the Windows key again, and go to the Run line, you may be able to type something in the Run space....
    Type in just this: sfc /scannow
    And press Enter key once.
    If you get a prompt about having your XP CD in the drive to get file from, or the version of Windows is newer than your CD, try pointing it to the
    C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder to look for files in.
    If you cannot type in the Run line, and nothing else works, try starting up in Safe Mode to use sfc /scannow.
    How to get to Safe Mode in XP:
    Restart your computer.
    Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
    Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter
    Ok, I realized that I could do what you told me to because I could get to System Restore through All Programs. I didn't think that one through very well. I did a sytem restore and now everything is back to normal except the taskbar on the bottom with Start and the quick launch icons is all gray. It is set to be in the other mode thats blue and green but it stays gray. I also added the .reg file into the registry. What was that supposed to do? Here's a new hijack this in case you need it. Thanks.
    Hi, It's going to take too long to finish tonite, but I will be around in the morning, if you want to try the steps I had in my replies from the start up to the point of NOT running that CleanUp, do it! It should work to remove the virus.
    You need to do the steps again to remove the infection, but this time, we can skip the CleanUp!
    First, run an online scan here:
    http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
    Or here:
    http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm
    When the online scan finishes, save the report or results> Panda calls the Report activescan.txt, save it to your desktop, and include the contents of it by copy/paste along with a new Hijackthis log in your next reply.
    Continue on with the steps, of course you already have the downloads, just run the programs as we did the first time.
    Be sure you do not turn off System Restore this time just yet, we might need it! You will be OK until morning.
    I think there are some other fixes for the grayed out Quick Launch icons and if I cannot get it, Cookiegal or someone can.
    I will look for you around 8 am EST.
    Again, sorry that it blew up on us, and we will do all we can to get you running correctly!
