here is my problem. evertime i start windows it starts to load and then numerious pop ups saying, " (any program) has encountered a problem and needs to close." This goes on for about 5 min... After I close the pop ups i then try and open other programs which load for a second and then just stop.. I have no idea what is happening.. Should I post my HiJack log ? would that help? The O4 list shows way too many unnecessary programs loading during startup and running in the background.

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG, then click OK - "Startup" tab. Every entry listed there with a checkmark next to it is loading and running.

This site will assist you in getting the startup list trimmed down.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These entries in the O23 list can be changed in the Services window from "Automatic" to "Manual":

ATI HotKey Poller

ATI Smart

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Create a new folder in the C:\Program Files folder, name it HijackThis, then move the HijackThis.exe file from its current location to the new C:\Program Files\HijackThis folder.

After you do that, delete all files and folders from inside these Temp folders:

C:\Documents And Settings\(Username)\Local Settings\Temp

C:\Windows\Temp

It's all useless junk.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Get rid of all those toolbars.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sometimes, not all temp files will delete because some of them may still be in use. Just delete all the others.

Those 2 TEMP folders should be checked and emptied at least once a week.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anytime you edit the startup list and then restart, you need to place a checkmark in the SCU window that appears and then click OK, or else it'll keep reappearing and you'll see this entry:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfig] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /auto

in your HijackThis log.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These startup entries:

HPDJ Taskbar Utility hpztsb04.exe

ATIPTA atiptaxx.exe

UserFaultCheck dumprep 0 -u

Acrobat Assistant AcroTray.exe

don't need to load and run, so uncheck them.

You can also uncheck this entry:

WINREMOTE WinRemote.exe

if you're not using a remote control with the InterVideo WinDVD program.
