I want to re-start learning "PHP" but after looking in Synaptic i only got confused by the sheer amount of titles listed with PHP so instead i went along to: "apachefriends.org" and using the Firefox browser downloaded to my desktop: "xampp-linux-1.6.6.tar.gz". Now after downloading i was informed that i had to Extract the downloaded archive file to /opt? Could someone please tell me how i do this please. Thanks in advance for any help and advice.

Hi xlanou,

Try:
$ gunzip xampp-linux-1.6.6.tar.gz
$ tar -xf ./xampp-linux-1.6.6.tar
which will most likely create the folder/subdirectory to your current working directory named xampp-linux-1.6.6
$ cd xampp-linux-1.6.6

There, look for a README file, and follow its directions.

Use: $ more README
to read the file.

P.S. Next time, try to post in the same thread instead of starting a new one about the same issue. It keeps things together and simplifies everything. for everyone responding to your post without having to chase between threads.
