I've been trying to remove the xp defender pro 2010 virus from an XP OS SP3 (computer is P4 with 1.25GB RAM and 2.66GHz).

I've stopped it popping up and prompting upgrades to full version etc. but there remain some unresolved issues.. perhaps additional malware/ spyware.. google is redirecting and on one of the user areas (not all) applications (.exe) will not run, instead the 'open with what application' window comes up.

i used portable SOS in safe mode and removed some trojans etc. and have also downloaded the full version and run that but When I install Malwarebytes I've been getting a runtime error and can't update or use it to scan.

    Any help greatly appreciated..

    Many Thanks!

    Welcome to TSG :)

Download Combofix from this webpage: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

    --------------------------------------------------------------------

    1. Close any open browsers.

    2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
    • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

thanks for your help. I solved this a little while ago. For anyone who is reading this and has a similar problem, after running several anti-spyware and anti-virus utilities I downloaded the 30 day free trial version of the kaspersky anti virus pro software (i assume pretty much the same as the free version) and ran a full scan, this picked up and removed a Rootkit 32 virus (which may or may not have been related to the xp defender pro virus) that none of the other scans picked up.

    No problems since.
