Hi,

This is my first time to this board, so please forgive any lack of etiquette I might be showing.

I've been battling this same problem (desktophijack & oneclicksearch) for a couple of days now and am hoping for some help as well. I've installed the latest version of HiJackThis, so I'll just post the logfile here. TIA.

Hi and welcome to TSG,

I have split your post off into your own thread as it gets too confusing trying to help two people at the same time.

I will post back with instructions shortly.

  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Unzip smitRem.zip to extract the two files it contains.
  • Do not do anything with it yet. You will run the RunThis.bat file later in safe mode.

Go here to download CCleaner.
  • Install CCleaner
  • Launch CCleaner and look in the upper right corner and click on the Options button.
  • Click Advanced and remove the check by Only delete files in Windows temp folders older than 48 hours.
  • Click OK
  • Do not run CCleaner yet. You will run it later in safe mode.

Click here to download Killbox and save it to your desktop.

Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here.
  • Install Ewido.
  • During the installation, under Additional Optionsuncheck[ b]Install background guard[/b] and Install scan via context menu.
  • Launch Ewido
  • It will prompt you to update click the OK button and it will go to the main screen
  • On the left side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start and let it update.
  • DO NOT run a scan yet. You will do that later in safe mode.

Click here for info on how to boot to safe mode.

Now copy these instructions to notepad and save them to your desktop. You will need them to refer to in safe mode.

Restart your computer into safe mode now. Perform the following steps in safe mode:

Now go ahead and set your computer to show hidden files like so:

Go to Start – Search and under More advanced search options, make sure there is a check by Search System Folders and Search hidden files and folders and Search system subfolders.

Next, click on My Computer, Go to Tools – Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is checked. Also uncheck Hide protected operating system files and Hide extensions for known file types. Now click Apply to all folders. Click Apply and then OK.

Run HijackThis again and put a check by these. Close ALL windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Now put a tick by Standard File Kill. In the Full Path of File to Delete box, copy and paste each of the following lines one at a time then click on the button that has the red circle with the X in the middle after you enter each file. It will ask for confirmation to delete the file. Click Yes. Continue with that same procedure until you have copied and pasted all of these in the Paste Full Path of File to Delete box.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\msmsgs.exe

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\SbCIe028.dll

Note: It is possible that Killbox will tell you that one or more files do not exist. If that happens, just continue on with all the files. Be sure not to miss any.

Exit the Killbox.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.

Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Put a check by the following before you scan:
    • Binder
      [*]Crypter
      [*]Archives
  • Click the Start Scan button to start the scan.
  • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
  • When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
  • Save the report to your desktop

Start CCleaner and click Run Cleaner

Go to Control Panel – Internet Options. Click on the Programstab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.

Next go to Control Panel – Display. Click on the Desktop tab then click the Customize Desktop button. Click on the Web tab. Under Web Pages you should see an entry checked called something like Security info or similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button. Click OK then Apply and OK.

Restart back into Windows normally now.

Run ActiveScan online virus scan here

When the scan is finished, have it delete anything that it cannot clean. Make a note of the file location of anything that cannot be deleted so you can delete it yourself. - Save the results from the scan!

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from ActiveScan and the Ewido scan

thanks, Cookie.

couple of problems....

I performed all the steps as instructed, however:

The Ewido scan stopped with an error around the 94% complete point.

The ActiveScan wouldn't run. I clicked on "start" after submitted my geographic info and it just sat there.

Here is the latest HJT logfile:

Please download and run the following program(s):

AD-AWARE

Go here and download Ad-Aware SE.

Install the program and launch it.

First, in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From the main window, click Start then under Select a scan Mode tick Perform full system scan.

Next, deselect Search for negligible risk entries.

Now to perform a scan, click the Next button.

When the scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. To do so, right-click in the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and then click Next)

Restart your computer.

SPYBOT SEARCH & DESTROY

Go here and download Spybot Search & Destroy.

Install the program and launch it.

Before scanning press Online and Search for Updates .

Put a check mark at and install all updates.

Click Check for Problems and when the scan is finished let Spybot fix/remove all it finds marked in RED.

Restart your computer.

You have to have ActiveX Controls enabled to do the Panda scan. After running the above programs, try again to run the Panda scan and Ewido.

Hi, Cookie. I'm down to the last step of your last post. For some reason the activescan still won't run. I'll try to run Ewido in the meantime.

thanks!

Hmm, no dice. Activescan still won't run in IE or Firefox, and Ewido still shuts down around 93%.

Click here to download The Hoster. UnZip the file and press Restore Original Hosts and press OK. Exit Program.

Then try again to run the Panda scan please.

I'm sorry, Cookie. Activescan just sits there after I hit start, even after running the Hoster executable. Good news is that my desktop is no longer hijacked. If you have any other suggestions to continue troubleshooting, I'm all ears. Thanks a million for all the help over the last couple of days.

that didn't do it either.

When I run Ewido scan, I click the checkbox that makes it automatically clean all files that come up. When I check back, a few hours later, there is a Windows Explorer message that comes up saying Ewido will have to shut down. I acknowledge and it shuts down. It's one of those send or "dont send" prompts that Windows brings up.

Try uninstalling Ewido and reinstalling it and see if that makes any difference.
