Hi there. I have a 1 TB WD My Book external harddrive. I recently dropped it and now it's stopped working. My Sony laptop doesn't recognize it at all. However, when I go to Devices and Printers, I see the the My Book icon there. The hard drive's still spinning, and the white light comes on when I plug the power adapter in.

At this point, I'm just worried about getting all the data off of there. I'm an amateur photographer and have about 4 years of photos and videos in there! Someone tell me that there's hope out there, anything using testdisk or whatever? Thanks in advanced!

you may have broken the drive or possibly the control unit for the drive ?

it maybe worth seeing if you can take the unit apart and remove the harddrive and see if you can then reconnect the hard-drive to a PC and use it.
there are quite a few USB to IDE/SATA adapters available to do that

this is not a recommendation, as i have not used this cable - but to provide an example

you then connect the USB to your PC and the power and connection to the drive

When you get this sorted, look into MS Sky Drive or Picasa Web Gallery. External hard drives are not very reliable, as you now know.
Optical media backup is also a good choice.
