Hello
I have a new computer that I bought only...in June! So..I know..I'm horrible that it's gotten bogged down already--but I just need a little help and guidance of what to do to a) unbog it :D..and b) avoid future bogging down...
Anyway...I was going to uninstall some things the other day..but I wasn't sure what everything on the list was...so I thought that if maybe I posted a log...someone might be familiar with that names of things that should be deleted (for example..toolbars...etc..)...Here's my log--any help would be greatly appreciated.
btw, my computer is a Dell-Inspiron E1505, running Windows XP Home Edition.

Hey--I just downloaded Ad-Aware 2007--and am currently doing a full scan--I'll post a new log after that. :D

You see all those "04" items in the scanlog? There is probably not one of them that is critical EXCEPT for your McAfee antivirus entries.

Do NOT use Hijackthis to fix any of them.

Instead, run msconfig, select the startup tab and uncheck a bunch. The least important are the media player and Adobe entries, but you can feel free to experiment.

Anything can be re-enabled if leaving it disabled poses a problem or inconvenience.

Anything there can also be run on an "as needed" basis from a shortcut or the start menu.

You can "google" the exes to see what they are, or just look them up here:

Well in addition to what I mentioned before -- here is my standard set of questions for "performance" issues -- I doubt if any of them will really apply (unless you are physically short on ram -- less than 1gb) since you seem to be looking for a startup trim -- but it won't hurt to go through them:

PERFORMANCE QUESTIONS:

0 > when did the problem seem to be begin?
1 > is it very slow to boot up?
2 > do programs open slowly?
3 > does the same behavior occur both on and off the internet. Or with no connection at all?
4 > does it matter how long the system has been on, and does a restart improve things?

Slow performance issues can often be due to overheating, so if the system is faster after it has been shutdown for a while and then restarted -- that would be especially suspect. To check for possible problems here, shutdown, open the case and blow out any accumulated dust. Then turn it
on and check to see that the fan is working. Sometimes it helps to physically clean the fan.

If a laptop, check to see that the vent is clear of dust and verify the fan is working. Temps and fan speed can usually be monitored with SpeedFan (except on Dell desktops), a free utility.

5 > if you do a ctrl-alt-del, do any processes show excess cpu usage, other than System Idle Process?

6 > If you open the Device Manager (run devmgmt.msc) and select the entry for IDE ATA/Atapi and select the Primary IDE > Advanced Settings, does it say the "current transfer mode" is Ultra DMA or PIO?

If it says PIO or even just DMA (rather than “ULTRA” DMA, first ensure "Use DMA if Available” is selected, then select the driver tab and uninstall the driver and reboot. Then check again.

*note that the above will not apply to RAID drive configurations.
____________________________________________________________________________
COMMIT CHARGE

Do ctrl-alt-del to open up the task manager. Select the "performance" tab. Let me know what you see under:

Physical Memory

Total: this is your total installed ram -- "physical" memory
Available: this is the amt of real "physical" memory presently uncommitted

Commit Charge

Total: this is the combination of total physical and virtual memory currently in use
Limit: this is the total physical and virtual memory available
Peak: this is the most you have had in use in this session

Hello--

0. problem began..recently...my computer used to be really fast, as it is new..but it just seems to have a lot of unnecesary programs on it now that I don't even know what they are?!
1. Boot up is actually fairly fast
2. Programs open very slowly! Even just firefox
3. Yes--Internet is very slow also--and I'm on a school network that is EXTREMELY FAST on everyone else's.
4. Restarting sometimes improves things..but not very much...it's probably just because there's nothing open then :p

Random computer info:
SYSTEM:
Microsoft Windows XP
Home edition
version 2002
service pack 2

Dell Inspiron e1505
Intel (R) Core(TM) 2 CPU
T5300 @ 1.73 GHz
1.73 GHz, 2.00 GB of RAM

There is nothing there that reveals the source of the problem.

You have plenty of available resources, no process is misbehaving, your IDE settings are as they should be.

The only other thing that I can think of might be overheating, but this is not likely to be a factor in a relatively new computer.

Of course, when you took those readings might be an issue -- you should look when it is particularly slow.

>>Another thing is that you have two antivirus programs running. Choose between McAfee and Symantec or they will conflict.
>> actually it looks as though Symantec may just have been incompletely uninstalled. The orphan service should be disabled :

23 - Service: Symantec Core LC - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe

Run services.msc and locate the above service, double click it and set the startup mode to "disabled" and reboot.

I disabled that file, but I never knew I had two antiviruses...my computer came with Norton, and a tech guy at my school told me not to use norton and gave me a copy of the school's mcaffe...so maybe that's when it happened...
Anyway--I have another question.
I have always been told to use firefox--so I have that downloaded and use it--but for some of the programs/sites i have to use for school--it isn't compatible with firefox, and i HAVE to use internet explorer...BUT
whenever (or most of the time) when I bring up IE--I get the illegal opperation message...do firefox and IE not work when they are both downloaded on one system....
Another thing..when I actually can get IE to work--it is MUCH faster than firefox...like..5x faster...but I thought that firefox was supposed to be faster because it was a lighter program...

Just some random questions, but hope you can help--Carrie

There are a couple of things you can try by way of troubleshooting.

One is to "clean boot" the machine and see what problems you still may have. If none, you can proceed with a process of elimination >>

Run msconfig and select the "Services" tab. Check "Hide Microsoft Services" and then disable the rest. Also uncheck "load startup group" on the general page.

See this link for detailed information:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;310353
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 << for Vista, but applies equally to XP, and better written.

Now restart and test the issue at hand

If no problems, run msconfig and recheck half the disabled items on the Services tab. Test again. If the problem recurs, UNcheck half the items you just checked to narrow down the culprit.

If the problem didn't occur, check the other half, so all the Services are enabled -- proceed to do this on the startup tab as well.

Get the idea? You want to isolate the problem to a specific startup if possible.

Note: if you already have items unchecked under msconfig > startups and are in “selective” startup mode – you should note what these are before beginning. They will need to be de-selected again.

>> For IE issues specifically, you can try running it in "no add-ons mode"

This is diiscussed in a new "beta" troubleshooting site for IE >

http://support.microsoft.com/gp/pc_ie_intro

>> There is no conflict between IE and Firefox -- I have both and Opera as well.

You need to quote exact error messages. You can view these by running eventvwr.msc and looking at the Applications log.

You can double click those to read the description and there is a "double-paper" copy icon that can copy the description to the clipboard for pasting.

Well, feel free to experiment to find the culprit -- you don't want to leave your basic antivirus deselected if you have done that.

As for additional protection -- I really think you are just fine with McAfee and Ad-aware.

More is not merrier. Mysterious issues and conflicts will sooner or later rear up if you have too much going.

Your best protection is password protecting your own User Account -- and giving your kids their own accounts with limited privileges. Let them check with you before allowing them to install anything.
