    Hello,
Hope this is the right spot to post this! I have an HP pavillion notebook. The harddrive crashes due to a power surge in Italy. I had the recovery cds, but then found out my cd dvd player was inoperable as well. The computer place could not fix it. SO I brought it back to america. Now I cannot find my recovery cds!!! I wanted to put in the new hard drive and replace the cd dvd player, and recover my system. Now what can I do? Hp says they no longer have these recovery cds. Is my computer useless. I just bought it 2 yrs ago but it was refurbished. I spent quite a bit of money on it..about 1400 or so and do not want to have to throw it away and buy a new one.
    Thanks for your help!!!!!!

What operating system did you have before? You can still buy the operating system and install it.

The hardware that HP use is not specific to an "HP" version of Windows, you can (as above) simply buy a retail version CD of the Windows operating system.

All that you will possibly need to do "extra" is visit the HP website and locate the "drivers" for your laptop, download them and install them. Windows will provide basic drivers but you may need the specific ones to get everything working correctly (but if it goes OK with the basic Windows drivers then its not always essential).

The advantage of loading a "retail version" is that it will not load all the unrequired HP applications that just clog up the system.

Thank you! I had the OS on my laptop when I purchased it ,and have since used the recovery cds about 3 times to recover my system after problems occured.

So, I can just buy the retail version? I did locate the recovery cds specific to my model no on a website. Do you think it is easier to install those, or to just use the retail version?
PS..another quick question..ebay has 2 people who advertise these special recovery or repair cds that work for about any version of windows. I do not quite understand what they are for but one person said they contain info that the computer companies and repair operations do not want you to know about. Does anyone know about these cds and if they are really usefull and for what exactly. They claim you can fix and recovery your system, however when I emailed one of them, they said it will not recover the operating system.
    Thanks
    pam

That's really up to you. Many people like the convenience of the recovery CD's in that everything that came with the computer gets installed.

Others, me included, prefer to format new computers and use the retail version so that all the junk installed by manufacturers is avoided and the machine can be completely customized.

If you have the software you want on the machine to install separately, then go with the retail. If the programs you want are only available to you on the recovery CD's and you don't have them or wish to buy them, then go with the manufacturer's setup. That has the advantage of including drivers that you may need to find if you use the retail version.
