    Hi All,

I have a laptop with a Windows XP home licence that I've had to install a new hard drive in. I needto reinstall Windows XP home but I don't have the discs. Any advice? Can I download the genuine software from somewhere or do I have to track down a friend with the discs (I tried this but no luck so far :).

    Cheers

    Glen

Thanks for posting that. I read through the forum listing and from it I gathered the following. I'm out of luck. I need to find someone with the discs. If anyone else has another answer please let me know.

You can buy restore disks from the laptop mfgr, they aren't expensive unless you have a Gateway.

I really like this stuff about bit-torrent downloading. Isn't that a bit illegal and also is that according to the rules here at TSG....? The second post is telling the same thing to go download thru a bit torrent. Are we a hackers board all os a sudden.

The correct solution to this since apparently no recovery disk set was made from the original installation is to call the manufacturer of the computer and order the proper recovery disk set, and you will not pay as much for them as you would purchasing a new install disk from Microsoft.

Thank you everyone for the advice. Not sure I completely agree with the comment about hacking in the sense that I own the license for the software, I just don't have the physical discs. But I take your point and I certainly wouldn't want to violate the rules of the forum.
