I'm helping a friend of mine, who knows almost nothing about computers. She e-mailed me and told me that Norton said she had this Trojan.Vundo. She said it got rid of it, but after having her send me her HJT lofile, it's still there. I'm not 'that' sure what else is bad here, other than the 2 I have in bold below. Any help is appreciated. As soon as we get this trojan off her computer, I'm going to help her add some security to her computer...and I'll take any suggestions there as well....hopefully free programs as she don't have any money to spend since her husband died last year.

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning and a list of forums to seek help at.
    it should look like this
    VundoFix V2.13 by Atri
By pressing enter you agree that you are using this at your own risk
  • At this point press enter one time.
  • Next you will see:
Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.
  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
    • C:\WINDOWS\System32\vtuuu.dll
  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
  • Next you will see:
Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.
  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
    • C:\WINDOWS\System32\uuutv.*
  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
  • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:
    • O2 - BHO: ATLDistrib Object - {2353FCBC-012D-487B-8BF3-865C0929FBEB} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\vtuuu.dll
      O20 - Winlogon Notify: vtuuu - C:\WINDOWS\System32\vtuuu.dll
  • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
  • Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.
Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Thanks Derek, as soon as I can get her to do this (hopefully today), I will post everything.

Derek,

Here is what she told me. My pc still won't load in safemode. I followed the directions that I printed out on starting the pc in safemode and I still get the same black screen with white letters on all four corners that say safemode and the windows operating system info on one line across the top. It won't go any further than that screen no matter which way I do it.

Derek, I also gave her these instructions ( http://tinyurl.com/cfgml ) for starting up safe mode if she couldn't do it by hitting the F8 key. She got the same results both ways. Any suggestions?

That does happen sometimes with some computers and vvundo

If you cannot get into safe mode & get a black screen that says "safe mode" in all 4 corners and no desktop appears then try this

It appears that the code in the Vundo trojan is so badly written, that many users cant go into safe mode because "explorer.exe" is occupied trying to execute these codes and occupies 100% of the CPU capacity.

Try this procedure:

When you come to the point where the black screen appears and the text "safe mode" is displayed in the corners, open the taskmanager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) and find "explorer.exe . Click on it in the list and click "Terminate". This will probably take several minutes.
Once Explorer is terminated, navigating with the mouse will be easy, however you will have a desktop without icons.

Now, remember where you installed the "VundoFix" . Open the taskmanager again, and click "File>Run" in the toolbar. Type in the filepath to the VundoFix in the scrollbar and hit enter.
The default location of the VundoFix is here :
C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR USERNAME\Desktop\VundoFix\KillVundo.bat . Replace "your username" with your actual one.
Then click "ok" and if everything work as planned, you will now be able to run the VundoFix and go on with the procedure I already posted.

Since you during this operation cant navigate via Explorer, its important that you print those instructions, both the ones here and the entire cleaning procedure for the Vundo.

If that doesn't work we do have another approach

Derek,

That's not going to work. She said that there isn't a "explorer.exe" there. 10 other things, but not that. She said that the CPU usage shows 99% tho.

Please try it this way:
Run VundoFix and click Scan for Vundo
Click Remove Vundo, and choose Yes when prompted to remove files
Your Desktop will disappear for a moment
Click OK when prompted to shutdown your computer
Turn your computer back on. Post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt as well as a new HijackThis log

You mean run it in regular mode? With everything loaded like normal?

Looks like that took care of it. Do you see anything else wrong?

Uninstall WinFixer if it appears in Start>>Control panel>>Add or Remove Programs

Then fix this in HijackThis:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WinFixer2006] "C:\Program Files\WinFixer_2006\uwfx6.exe" /min

And delete C:\Program Files\WinFixer_2006\

Sorry for the delay. This lady isn't on the computer on Sundays. Here is what she sent. I'm not sure if the 1st part is the Panda Active Scan, or what. I e-mailed her back to ask, but it will probably be tomorrow before I hear back from her.
