I have a clean install of XP Home. SP2 is one it. When I tried to put on SP3 I get a message:
Error Signature
Event type: visualstudio8setup P1: 10860 followed by P2 thru 10.

Without SP3 none of the anti virus programs will go on.
They sit in my downloads file and will not open. Those that do open tell me I need SP3.

I suggest you read my Windows XP install and update guide.
Also read the new alternative guide below it that I recently added.

If you did a clean install of Windows XP Home Edition SP2, you shouldn't have any trouble afterwards with installing the 316 MB-size SP3 upgrade.

It sounds like you're trying to install a bunch of apps in your computer before Windows XP is completely installed and up-to-date.

Seems that the item labeled Net Framework 3 was not that. In the process of trying to install it, there appeared in the Program List an item labeled KB942288 Hotfix. So I did a search and it seems to be an installer and not the SP 3. So then I found that SP3, downloaded it and it did go on. I'm elated. Thanks, I copied and saved your instruction for any future need.
