    Hi
I have a compaq presario V6500 laptop running windows vista SP2. For the past few days i am not able to connect to the internet using ethernet port. But my wireless still works.
On checking device manager, my network adapter, a nVidia nForce networking controller#2, gives the following error.
"This device cannot start (Code 10)". I have tried updating the driver software, without any luck.
    Pls help.

Usually a driver corruption. Updating does not work, so try completely uninstalling the adapter, then restart the computer. When you right click on the adapter in Device Manager, click uninstall on the list. Once the adapter is removed, restart the laptop.

Another option would try a system restore to a time before the problem occured.

Tried uninstalling, didnt work. Actually clicking uninstall didnt do anything at all. It didnt uninstall the driver.
Also I dont have any restore points older than 7 days. And I have been having the problem for more than a month now. :-(
Could this be a hardware problem?

Surprised the uninstall doesn't work. Should have removed the listing from Device manager..

Did some checking at HP/Compaq for the V6500 series shows Realtek RTL8101 Family PDI-E Fast Etehrnet NIC with dirver version 6.202.125.2008, dated 31MAR 2008.

Only nVidia product shown is the alternate GeForce graphics card.
Are you sure the wrong drivers weren't downloaded for the ethernet card?

Actually my laptop is a compaq preasrio V6608 AU. But ya even I couldnt find the driver for the nvidia, at their website.
But all I did was an automatic update of the driver software.
Well what can be done now?

The HP/Compaq shows the Presario V6608 AU was made with an intgrated Realtek 10/100 NIC.

Not sure why you show an nVidia nForce.Controller,

Hey I tried uninstalling again and lo and presto its started working again. (It still says nVidia nForce netw. controller.)
But I still am not able to connect to the internet. Grrrrrrh
I live in a college dorm. I have a wall socket into which i connect my ethernet cable and the other end goes into my laptop. I do not have an external modem (P.S Is this an FTTx connection?)
When I connect my ethernet cable it says - Unindentified network, Local access only.
I have checked with ISP, the IP address is correct. Other laptops work in my room, which rules out any problem with the connections.
So what next? Thanks for all the help so far.

Post the results of ipconfig /all.

    From a JohnWill post.
Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista or 7 type CMD in the Search box after Start)

    Type the following command:

    IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

What firewalls and A/V are you using? Could be settings on those. Turn them off and try connecting to see if that helps.

You are not getting an IP address from the DHCP server. Have you tried connecting your computer to another wired connection and verified that it does work with another connection?

    Try a dynamic ethernet connection.

To configure a dynamic IP address on your Windows Vista or 7 computer:

    1. Click Start.
    2. Select Network, then Network and Sharing Center, and click Manage network connections or Change adapter settings from the list of tasks.
    3. Right click the connection of interest and click Properties.
    4. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) from the list and click the Properties button.
    5. Select Obtain an IP address automatically.
    6. Select Obtain DNS Server address automatically.
    7. Click OK.
    8. Click Close.

Post another ipconfig /all if that does not result in a good connection.
